Alaska Guide: Pam Andrea
Guide: Pam Andrae
| Short Bio: Pam grew up in Newport News, Virginia, not an area known for being particularly outdoorsy. Fortunately she comes from a restless family who carted her off on vacations whenever time allowed. They went whitewater rafting, caving, hiking, kayaking and sometimes they just jumped in the car and let the road take them away. She owes her love for traveling to her family and upbringing.
Jump to more recent times, Pamela began school at East Caroling University in Greenville North Carolina in the fall of 2005. In 2006 she found the amazing Adventure Program on campus. Through this program Pam honed her love for the outdoors and became a trip leader. She led rock climbing, sea kayaking and caving trips for 5 years. Pam has also practiced yoga and for five years and has become an avid cyclist. |

Whatever activity Pam is doing you can bet she is pushing herself and everyone around her to make it a challenge but also to enjoy what they are doing.

My favorite destination? My favorite destination is the Appalachian mountains of Virginia. Whether it be hiking, climbing or caving I love the variety and beauty this range gives you. There are quaint towns to stop in and breath-taking views everywhere you look. What destination would you like to visit? Alaska! I’m so excited to take in the rare beauty of Alaska. Its contrasting landscape will offer me a whole new appreciation for the environment. What’s your favorite bike ride? It would have to be the lovely flat roads of eastern North Carolina. Wide open crop fields and small creeks litter the area and give you glimpses into different ecosystems. Plus whenever you’ve finished your journey you can count on which ever small town you’ve landed in to sure you some down-home southern goodness. Southern cooking is the best way to end a long ride. |

What is your favorite hike? I have had the privilege to hike in many beautiful areas around the world but I think my favorite hike would have to be the snow-covered trails in the foothills of the Andes in Argentina. Just outside the town of Bariloche the trail begins, completely covered in snow and ice with difficult water crossings we winded our way along the ridge. After the fog lifted I could see the most beautiful crystal-clear lakes and snow-topped mountains. I was giddy the whole time. |

What’s your favorite trip to guide? Why? It has to be rock climbing. These trips really push the participants and challenge the staff in multiple ways. I loved watching others progressions and feeling my own. Even though these were just one day trips they were extremely long and no matter how bad the weather was or how tired everyone became the trips were always rewarding.
What do you do that makes a guest’s vacation special? I’ve been told I do a good job of putting people at ease, so I think regardless of the situation people have fun on my trips. They always say they love how laid back and fun the days are like everything is taken care of and they don’t have to worry about anything. I like knowing they are comfortable letting their guard down.

What are your hobbies? My hobbies are traveling, road biking, yoga, rock climbing, sea kayaking and reading. When did you first catch the travel bug? I caught the travel bug early! I come from a family of vagabonds so it may be in my DNA to get up and move. There isn’t one year from my past I haven’t gone some place new. It isn’t even a choice anymore I have to explore! |

What are your hobbies? Playing guitar, writing music, backbacking, and working on my VW Vanagon
When did you first catch the travel bug? 10 years ago while traveling on my Kawasaki in an attempt to see all the national parks of the western US. I had just taken a three-month leave of absence from my job. I never went back.
