Top Tens by the ALA Team
Top Ten Restaurants
Christy offers her favorite places to eat around the world.
1. Chico Hot Springs Dining Room, Pray, Montana: The Kitchen uses only the best local and regional ingredients, including produce and herbs from the onsite greenhouse and garden. Try the baked brie, Gorgonzola Filet Mignon, and the Flaming Orange for dessert!
2. Trio, Jackson Hole, Wyoming: Owned and operated by local chefs in the middle of the Cowboy town of Jackson. Feast on the Arugala Salad, Grilled Buffalo Rib Eye, and any one of the delightful desserts!
3. Obauer, Werfen, Austria: The kitchen of the brothers Karl and Rudolf Obauer turns out fare that is regional, seasonal, creative, traditional and modern, hot and cold, and usually all of the above at the same time. It is backed up by such an extensive philosophy that it is almost impossible to explain. Master sommelier, Alexander Koblinger, makes sure the wine cellar is full of bottles that will capture your interest. All this served in an elegant ambiance. Their breakfasts are legendary for their freshness and presentation.
4. Cicciolinas, Cusco, Peru: This restaurant, established in 1993 and named after the Hungarian born, Italian ‘actor” / politician Ilona Staller is in the middle of Cusco and features items like Spaghettini vongole, veal schnitzel, and oven baked chicken!
5. Mayer's, Zell am See, Austria: This Michelin Star restaurant is located in a castle-turned-hotel. Each plate is like a work of art... a delicious work of art!
6. Jack Sprat, Girdwood, Alaska: With a vision to nourish, educate, and inspire guests through food, you can’t go wrong with this small Alaskan restaurant. Jack Sprat’s dishes feature local and organic produce, sustainably caught Alaskan seafood, and only the best, humanely raised, natural meats and poultry.
7. The Place Bar and Grille, Friday Harbor, San Juan Islands, Washington: This restaurant sits over the ocean offering stellar views of Friday Harbor. Featuring fresh Northwest cuisine, dishes are innovative using local, seasonal, and sustainable ingredients. Try the baked oysters with hazelnut-garlic butter!
8. Greuze, Tournus, Burgundy, France: Restaurant Greuze is an invitation to a voyage, beginning in the ancient town of Tournus, transporting you along the dishes across all of Burgundy. Veritable gastronomic highlight thanks to a creative cuisine with local accents by the young chef Yohann Chapuis. In the kitchen, he is a true artist, creating, reinventing and redesigning each plate in the finest tradition. The
flavors and colors appeal to all the senses.
9. Ristorante al Volt, Riva del Garda, Italy: The restaurant is situated in a 17th town house in the historical center of the lake-side town of Riva del Garda. In its welcoming vaulted rooms with antique furniture and lots of red colors, Miriam and Silvana serve the dishes with kindness and discretion, while the chef Maurizio delicately prepares the food using traditional recipes of the "cucina Trentina", including fish from the lake and Meditteranean as well as meats from the territory.
10. Tra Vigne, Napa, California: Combines two of the world’s most culinary regions: Tuscany with its tasty pastas, meats, and cheeses and Napa Valley with its fresh, local ingredients and acclaimed wines. Taste the “Trio di Tonno” (olive oil poached tuna, tuna tartare, bottarga, crushed chiles, and meyer lemon)
