My Life-Changing ALA Experience by Denise Reynolds

Wednesday, November 7, 2012 by Guest Bloggers

A word from Denise Reynolds, an ALA Guest...

I am ALA's Grateful Seeker. I have recently discovered a new perspective of life I hadn’t seen, or had chosen not to notice, before. Or, perhaps, it is that I just hadn’t considered it before. Did my brain tuck it away as irrelevant or not applicable? Or did it decide that it was just too scary and uncertain to consider?   It appears that the answer to these questions and thoughts was just a mere 2490 feet up a mountain. When Dan Austin, my high school friend, challenged me to take one of their trips, never in a million years would I have considered the possibility that such a gift was right there at the top of Mt. Constitution in the San Juan Islands.

How do I thank the folks at Austin-Lehman Adventures for giving me the space to allow for such a gift? How can I express my gratitude for finally being able to see the next piece of the puzzle called my life? It truly boggles my mind that I am FOREVER changed as a result of this adventure. I hope to do my friend justice in the words I write here. It’s very important to me that you all understand the passion and joy and friendship this trip reminded me of, the grateful gift of outdoors. What these trips allow for all of us is an opportunity to be reminded. For me at least, this was the culmination and result of the adventure of ME thus far…. A truly Grateful Seeker.

I grew up fishing and camping with my family. My father was passionate about the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing and he took us out as often as life would allow. We owned our home, but money was tight and camping didn’t cost a lot so we indulged often. His first lesson, and something he religiously addressed the moment we arrived at the perfect spot to pitch our tent, Austin-Lehman Adventures adheres to as well. “We leave each place we visit a little better than when we left it”. This was the first moment of a tweak in my perspective. My head was rotated just enough to remember what is most important to keep my focus on. A bit of clarity about what is good… a nudge from the Universe to keep on THAT trail.

Dan has asked me to write about my experience on my first Austin-Lehman Adventure and I am very delighted to do so. The childhood memories that this trip brought back as I labored up those amazing switchbacks to the top of Mount Constitution brought tears of joy to my eyes. The smells of the forests, the crisp dawn and the vision of lakes sparkling with the first light of the morning sun are some of those memories. The struggles I really didn’t have to carry around all these years appeared to begin sliding off my shoulders as I climbed up that mountain. The realization that all I needed to do was change my perspective just a little tiny bit hit me right against my forehead as I looked out the tower window at the top of the world. From that perspective, my life’s view changes. My hope is that Austin~Lehman Adventures can give that opportunity to you too.

Thank you my friend Dan and your whole Austin-Lehman family.

Denise, ALA's grateful seeing guest...

5 Great Ways to Tantalize Your Senses in Holland

Monday, October 29, 2012 by Patrick Tigue

Netherlands Bike Tours 1

During your next visit to The Netherlands, when you stroll through Holland, give your senses a treat at a few of the famous locations of the different cities.  See what makes these locations so beautiful, and better yet, even magical.

Holland Bike Tours 3

5.  Stop by the famous city of Gouda.  Gouda didn’t become famous for its gorgeous canals, alleyways, midlevel mansions, or friendly locals, although all of these are great reasons to visit Gouda.  The real treat of Gouda is the amazing cheese of course, and it’s famous ‘stroopwafels’ (syrup waffles).  The mouthwatering flavor of the sweet waffles, in contrast to the rich variety of Gouda cheeses are sure to be a festival of flavors for your taste buds.

Haarlem

4.   You should also pay tribute to the arts during your trip.  The Netherlands is home to many famous and well-stocked museums.  Soak up some of Rembrandt’s noted pieces like The Night Watch as well as some of Jan Vermeer’s miniatures, and other works by Fans Hals.  You will also love the Van Gogh Museum with a broad collection of his work featuring 200 paintings and 500 drawings.  Pass through the city of Leiden and take a trip through time to The Dutch National Museum of Antiquities.  The national center of archaeology offers the cultures of ancient Egypt, the Near East, the classical world, and the early Netherlands.   The list of museums goes on and on, no lack of beauty and art in Holland.

3.   During the spring season in the flower fields of Keukenhof, you can breathe in the intoxicating aroma of tulips, hayacinths, and daffodils.  Inhale the fresh rows upon rows of flowers during a Dutch Bike Tour, and peddle past meadows filled with colorful and fragrant flowers.  Different events are also offered at the flower fields of Keukenhof, such as art days, the Dutch Folklore Festival (6 and 7th of April 2013), Birds of prey show (31 March and the 1st of April 2013), and many more.

Holland Family Vacations 8

2.  Cycle through the windmills of Holland and enjoy the light breeze that blows through the different cities.  The famous windmills are always a great location for a photo opportunity.  Enjoy the views and the amazing landscapes of Holland including a stroll through the majestically illuminated canals of Leiden.  Take a Holland Bike Tour and pedal a watery wonderland of canals, lakes and windmills in Lisse.  You will quickly realize why the Dutch population enjoys travelling upon two wheels.

Bikers at Zandvoort

1.  Enjoy a nice sea breeze and walk the pier, or along the soft sand beach in Scheveningen.  The very well maintained, white sand beaches of Scheveningen will offer great peace and quite to relax during your next vacation to The Netherlands.  Enjoy the warm embrace of some sunshine, and stop in to a café, or beachfront restaurant.  You can also rent a beach-chair, windshield, or parasol, to relax a bit more during your stay at the beach.

Start planning your next adventure travel vacation to the beautiful locations of Holland today.

Thanks for a great summer, ALA!

John Hinrichsen, who guided several Montana/Wyoming trips this summer, including Nam Fam, writes the following:

This was my first year guiding for Austin-Lehman and I will never forget it. Thank you to Dan and Kasey Austin for taking a chance on me.  I can’t wait for next year.  Thank you to the staff at Austin-Lehman for being so patient (anyone who has to decipher my hand writing on time sheets has to be a saint.)  Your kindness is truly felt.  HUGE and SPECIAL THANK YOU to all the other guides who made me feel like I was part of a family this year. You are all very special people, and I will miss you in the off season. In the kitchen of the Austin-Lehman office, hanging on the wall , are collages of past and present guides, just looking at the faces of each and every one, I couldn't help but feel the warmth and friendliness.  I can only imagine how many lives they must have touched during their trips over the years. I am certainly proud to be amongst them.  I am grateful for the opportunity to have met some of them, and carry on the tradition here at Austin-Lehman adventures.

Dan said during training, "You will find that there are lots of hugs here because we are like family;" he was right. During the long guiding season I found that no matter what, I could count on my guiding partners for anything. We always had each other’s back. I know I was always covered, and I appreciate and will never forget it.  Yesterday I dropped off a guide at the airport who was on her way home, and through a tearful good bye she said, "Such good people work in this company.  Everyone is so nice and I can't wait to come back." That pretty much says it all.

Nam Fam 2012!!

Tuesday, September 18, 2012 by Kasey Austin

After an amazing ten days spent guiding and exploring the expansive regions between Billings, MT and Jackson, WY with fourteen wonderful new friends from Namibia, I felt the need to write about a few learnings I took away from this remarkable opportunity of a trip. As a short background, my father, Dan Austin, took a trip to Namibia (his favorite place in the whole world) back in May. After lively and meaningful conversations amongst the group he was traveling with, he ended up extending an invitation to his friendly Namibian acquaintances to come and explore the Yellowstone and Grand Teton regions of the United States. Little did he know, that this welcoming invite would open up doors to these people who wanted to see the world. Read on to discover my three “take-aways” from this trip that has been deemed in our office as “The Nam Fam”.

1. These Namibians are one of a kind….

From the moment we picked our crew up from the airport, I could tell it was going to be a special week. The kindness these people show is like none other that I’ve seen in my travels around the world. We had quite the variety of Namibians in our group – village leaders, government officials, lodge contractors, WWF members, and conservancy workers were just some of the titles represented amongst these people. Their willingness and desire to learn about the geology, history, flora/fauna, and culture of the area made me see the lands I grew up in with a fresh perspective. Along our way, we met with numerous representatives of Montana and Wyoming – Cooke City’s historian, Yellowstone and Grand Teton’s sustainability directors, local World Wildlife Fund reps, wildlife biologists, ranchers, Native Americans and more. I couldn’t believe the amount of interaction and learning that took place within our “on-the-road classrooms.” All in all, the educational factor in this adventure was beneficial for each member (including myself) that was involved, and I believe that the Namibians’ excitement to learn made the whole experience that much more fun!

2. We experienced a whole lot of “firsts”!

Going into this adventure and not knowing the background of each of the Namibian members, left us planning this trip for fourteen people without knowing just how exciting a lot of our activities would be. Little did we know that many of our friends had never been on a plane before, and this was just the first of all of the “Wow’s” we would hear along the way. Visiting the Crow Reservation near Billings allowed our Namibians to make comparisons between the Crow tribe and the Namibian people such as the San and the Himba, a first time for them since they had never seen an American Indian reservation before. At the top of the Beartooth Pass (near 11,000 feet), many of our guests saw snow for the first time and of course we had our first snowball fight! Since none of our Namibians had been to North America before, each wildlife sighting was a first for them too – coyotes, wolves, black bears, moose, elk, and bison were just a few of the animals we saw (although we did hear a lot about the animals we needed to come and see back in Namibia!) Kayaking Jackson Lake was also a first in that many of our friends had never ridden in a boat of any kind, let alone a small two person kayak floating so close to the water. (There were many nervous questions about what could possibly eat you in a lake so large – I made sure everyone knew that alligators and hippos did not exist in the Tetons!) The last first I will mention is the American college football game that we attended on our last day together in Bozeman, Montana – the Bobcats versus the Lumberjacks. What an experience this was – from tailgating before the game to cheering the Cats on to victory, the excitement at this event was incomparable to any football game I’d ever been to before. Each and every first time activity left me grinning ear to ear – how neat to be able to share with these eager people America’s finest gems – it truly was a pleasure!

ALA Nam Fam - Kayaking Jackson Lake

3. Sustainable tourism – walking the walk

When it comes to sustainable tourism, there are a lot of people and companies that talk the talk, but how many are really out there that walk the walk? Sustainable tourism is defined as tourism that can efficiently and effectively occur over the long term that benefits the environments, cultures, and economies of where it takes place. As a company dedicated to sustainable tourism (as Austin-Lehman’s efforts in our nonprofit organization Wheels of Change shows), we felt that this fam trip definitely took a step in the direction of sustainable tourism in providing our fellow Namibians with connections, practices, ideas, and learnings to bring home to their people and businesses. Not only did we share America’s practices, but we compared our uses of sustainable tourism with the Namibians’ conservancy model. In a nutshell, Namibians use a conservancy to set aside land to protect natural resources (such as the local wildlife, a watershed, or a historic area) while employing almost all local people, therefore improving the economic livelihoods of those benefitting from the conservancies (the locals!). We discussed many times how the idea of a conservancy could be used in America, especially on our Native American reservations. All in all, the discussions regarding sustainable tourism in our lands near and far brought about interesting conversations and ideas that could lead to better sustainable practices both in Namibia and America.

ALA Nam Fam - Crow Reservation

Overall, this trip opened my eyes to the Namibian culture and way of life. These special people really are gems in this world we live in, and to get to know one (let alone fourteen of them)  is like inviting a brother or sister into your life. The fascination with our national parks and Native American reservations was evident in the questions asked throughout the trip. I couldn’t believe the number of “first times” we had for each activity we completed as a group, and just one of these experiences was extraordinary for these people let alone a whole list of them – I feel so lucky to have “relived” these firsts through fresh sets of eyes. Last of all, the ideas shared and connections made regarding sustainable tourism are sure to bring up some interesting questions and conversations that will last far beyond our time spent together in Montana and Wyoming. I can’t wait to see where this trip has led to when I visit Namibia for my very first time in 2013!!

Bike Tours in France

France Family Vacations 1

Enjoy the delights of the past from ruins and medieval streets, historic churches, and famous artists, to the wonders of the present day from fashions, farms, and delectable wines.  If you cannot decide which style of vacation you want to enjoy, why choose?  With an Austin-Lehman France Bike Tour you get the story telling and time travel to ancient eras, along with the beauties and wonders that locals today enjoy on a daily basis.  The mix of learning about history, experiencing local tastes and drinks, enjoying strolls and bike rides from location to location, get your hands a little dirty at the farms and vineyards, to the luxurious accommodations and spa hotels that you are able to retreat to at the end of the night.  For the best mix of activities to suit all of your traveling needs, check out an Adventure tour today to the beautiful countryside of France.

ALA-EuroBike - Bike tour along France's Normandy coast-1551 - 72 dpi

France biking vacations are offered in four different locations including Provence, The Loire Valley, Burgundy, and of course Brittany/Normandy.  The Provence a Pied is a great tour that focuses on gourmet excursions and travelling by foot to see the lovely locations of Provence.  The vineyards will be enjoyed by strolling through lanes of grapes, breathing in the aromas, soaking up the sunshine, and indulging in the flavors and varieties of grapes that elaborate the millions of bottles of fantastic wines.  Travel across the engineering marvel, the famous three-tiered aqueduct-bridge, and The Pont du Gard aqueduct.  Gape at the impressive bridge spanning 275 meters over the Gardon Valley.  Trek through the Roman ruins and learn about the ancient remains of the historical heritage of the old Roman civilization in the most perfectly preserved Roman amphitheater in the world to the Maison Carre.

ALA-EuroBike - Bike tour along France's Normandy coast-0726 - 72 dpi

If you choose to instead enjoy the city of Provence on a France bike tour rather then by foot you will not miss out on the Roman Ruins, will also walk the steps through history where six popes before had trekked, and of course view the aqueduct Pont du Gard.  Riding through the countryside with fields of lavender, sunflowers, vineyards, and olive groves you will soak in the landscape that inspired artists like Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Chagall.  Take a break from the bike ride and stop into the some of the local farms with ripe and delicious produce, local and savory products, and learn about the fascinating traditional way of farming in Provence.  If this tour didn’t already seem interesting enough throw in a visit to the nature reserve of The Camargue, a lovely wind-swept river delta bordering the Mediterranean Sea, where you can pass the time watching the grace and beauty of the pink flamingos.   If you are looking to visit other locations during your visit to France, book your flight out a week from when your tour ends.  Due to an excellent train network it is simple to pass from city to city.

ALA-EuroBike - Bike tour along Normandy coast in France - Card 8 A - -2487 - 72 dpi

Perhaps Provence doesn’t strike a chord with you; nevertheless, there are many other locations of France to consider. Your Loire Valley French Bike Tour offers some beautiful architectural sites including Chateau Amboise, Chateau Chambord, and Chateau Chenoceau.  Loire Valley is known for being host to many important castles from history dating back to the 15th and 17th centuries.  Learn the fascinating histories of how all of these castles came about from their competitive nature, and walk in the footsteps of Joan of Arc.  Also ride along through the towns, cathedrals, and villages to view the beauty that the town still currently holds.  The countryside and Rivers are worth the ride to enjoy a bit of the scenery and try out some of the flavors of local wine and food.

ALA-EuroBike - Bike tour along France's Normandy coast-1434 - 72 dpi

Another France bike tour location to consider is a Burgundy Bike Tour with Austin-Lehman Adventures.  Start your adventure with a visit to the university town of Dijon, explore the Musee des Beaux-Arts, and take a relaxing ride through the gargoyle-studded churches of Notre Dame.  What better wine to try then a classic glass of Burgundy while visiting the town of Beaune and try some of the astounding cuisines, and sweets that France has to offer, all in one of the oldest wine regions in France.  You will be able to enjoy great accommodations, staying true to some old fashioned charm and bask in some of the delights that Burgundy has to offer.  The pace of change in this vintage town is a bit slow to say the least, enjoy the personality and soak up some of the delicious products of this region.

Tannins and Titans: Wine Tasting in Chile and Argentina

Wednesday, August 29, 2012 by Blake Eden

Imagine yourself surrounded by the kind of scenery that most people only visit in their dreams: 22,000-foot, snow dusted peaks; valleys filled with soft rows of grape vines; and beautiful, cloud-speckled blue skies. Now, imagine that you are holding a tantalizingly good looking glass of Malbec.  You breathe in the tannins and take your first sip. It is balanced, smooth, easy to drink, and, most importantly, delicious.  Not only is it amazing because you are sitting at the very vineyard that the wine comes from, but also because you just completed a stunningly picturesque bike ride in the foothills of the Andes.  Now that you can practically taste the wine on your lips, imagine nine days of blissful moments like this one.  With ALA’s Chile and Argentina Wine Country Adventure, you will wine, dine, hike, bike and horseback your way from Mendoza, Argentina to Santiago, Chile.

Located in the heart of the Andes, Chile and Argentina are world-renowned for both their beauty and their wine.   Grapes were first introduced to the regions in the 16th century, when Spanish conquistadors brought vines over during colonization.  Today, Chile is the fifth largest exporter of wine in the world, while Argentina is the fifth largest producer.  During your South American wine adventure, you will visit wineries in both countries. While there you will learn the history of the vineyard, as well as how they produce their wine.  And, obviously, you will taste some truly spectacular vintages!

While the wines maybe the highlight of this trip, we can’t forget about the spectacular scenery, which elevates (no pun intended) this adventure to a whole new level.  Whether you are biking along endless rows of grape vines, or taking in the views of Mt. Aconcagua (the tallest peak in the Western and Southern Hemispheres) from Lake Horcones while enjoying a delicious picnic lunch, you cannot help but have your breath taken away by the landscapes surrounding you.

South American Wine Country

After nine days of fabulous food, wine and vistas, you can’t help but return to the “real world” a relaxed and changed person.  With mountain air in your lungs, and tannins still tickling your tongue, you’ll be raising a glass to your Chile and Argentina Wine Country Adventure for months to come.

Salud!

Don’t Run From a Griz & 9 Other Things Our ALA Guides Taught Us

Monday, August 20, 2012 by Austin-Lehman Travel Reviews

My Yellowstone Family vacation

This past July, my family- myself, my husband and our daughters ages 5 & 7, took our first family adventure vacation- the Montana Family Adventure.  To say it was life-changing really isn’t far off.  But beyond that, our terrific guides- Patrick, James and John- taught us quite a few things…  About Montana, about nature and about ourselves.

If you’re lost in the woods, you should start liken’ the lichen
Not that we were in any danger of going hungry (see below), Patrick gave us all a nature lesson the first day about lichen, an edible fungus that, though not the most tasty of substances, is filled with nutrients.  Just in case you’re lost in the woods without food.  Of course, he also tricked us with mountain goat poo, it was a friendly prank, which tasted surprisingly like carob.

There are no poisonous snakes in western Montana
To say I don’t like snakes would be an understatement.  I am terrified of them.  So I was (very) nervous about hiking through the wilds of Yellowstone.  In fact, one of my first questions was about snakes.  Patrick immediately put my fears to rest when he told us that western Montana isn’t warm enough for poisonous snakes.  (Yea!)

Don’t run from a griz

“Get your kids and start walking slowly backward towards the vans,” Patrick said.

We had stopped at a pullout- along with at least a dozen other people- due to a Grizzly sighting.  As we stood safely at the edge of the road, hoping for a glimpse, others were walking up and over the hill to get an “up close and personal” look.  And then Patrick saw one of the men come running back over the hill.

“I was sure we would see an attack,” Patrick told me later.  “You never run from a Griz, they will chase you.”  So, what should you do?  Apparently, you slowly back away, hoping the bear is bluffing.  If he does charge, curl in a ball and play dead.  (Yeah, I think my “flight” instinct would overrule that, too!)

There’s flat…  and then there’s “Montana flat”
We were prepared for most of our hikes.  But there were a couple that we were told were flat.  Of course, it was our guide John who told us that.  What we didn’t take into consideration was that John had climbed Mount Everest, so a somewhat challenging hike to us, was flat to him.  About half way through the week we knew to ask, “Is it really flat, or is it Montana flat?” meaning no really steep parts but still uphill.

Humans, though the most intelligent species on the planet, can be incredibly dumb
Not including the bear incident, we witnessed, first hand, the ignorance of people in the wild.  I was sure we would see a young man get gored by a buffalo.  Tip:  stay in your car when a herd is crossing the road.  We also saw entire families creeping way too close to Black Bear and quite a few adults walking within feet of a Bull Elk so they could get good photos with their iPhones.

The tales our guides shared put these to shame- and they didn’t end so well.  “People can do really stupid things here,”  James said.  “It’s like they think the animals are tame and the rangers let them out every day for the tourists to see.”

It is possible to be pampered at 12,000 feet when you’re covered in dust
When you’re covered head to toe in dust, some of which is turning to cakey mud as rivulets of sweat trickle down your body, it’s difficult to imagine feeling pampered.  And then your guides bring out silver trays of iced coffee.  Or they bring you wet wipes followed by sliced apples with caramel dipping sauce.  Not only do you feel pampered, but you are so thankful you didn’t have to carry it up yourself!

James and Patrick serving up a WOW

The Pied Piper is real
Though he wasn’t carrying pipes, Patrick managed to charm all the children on our tour.  Wherever he was, they wanted to be.  By mid-week the adults had termed him “the Pied Piper” as we knew that if our children weren’t with us, they would be near him.

The Pied Piper

Sometimes you have to work hard to see magnificence
Sure, you can see amazing things when you stay on the beaten path.  But to see truly breathtaking sights, you need to work harder.  This was truly driven home to us after we scraped and clawed our way up the steep hill behind the Grand Prismatic.  Only 10% of visitors to Yellowstone see this view.  It was worth every bruise and scrape.

Grand Prismatic in Yellowstone National Park

You’ll never go hungry.
Despite the increased amount of physical activity, you will never feel a hunger pang during your AL vacation.  Between the filling breakfasts, fabulous lunches, morning and afternoon snacks on the trail, “just in case” munchies in the vans, and local specialties for dinner each evening, hunger doesn’t stand a chance.

You can trust someone you just met with your kids in less than a week
At the beginning of our trip, we kept near the girls as we hiked.  By mid-week we kept them in our sights.  By the end of the week, as we were hiking through an area where bears had been sighted only the day before, our girls were separated- one in front of us and one behind- each so far away we couldn’t see or hear them.  As Doug and I walked along, we commented on the fact that we weren’t worried at all.  We knew that our youngest was at the front of the pack with John, while our eldest was tagging along at the end with Patrick.  And we knew that both were completely safe.

John, Patrick and james

Our family so thoroughly enjoyed our Austin-Lehman vacation that we are hoping to do another one next summer!  We’re thinking the Yellowstone/ Tetons trip…  unfortunately it has no horseback riding- which is a “must” for my youngest, who fell in love with her four legged guide this year.

Sincerely,

Jody Halsted

Holland on a Budget

Holland Bike Tours

I'll just come out and say, traveling to Europe isn't cheap. When you factor in airfare, hotels, activities, food, guides and transportation... it adds up to be a lot. That is why we've designed a 5 day/4 night Holland bike tour that shows you the highlights of Holland but without the major costs of a luxury adventure vacation. But don't think just because it isn't a luxury tour that you aren't going to get the same Austin-Lehman "WOW" from this trip. This tour includes a local guide, 4 nights accommodation, bikes, transportation, almost all your meals and a visit to the Keunkenhof. When you think of Holland I hope you think of frolicking through the tulips fields, (hopefully it's not just me) but regardless this tour takes you to all the great spots to see the tulips. The Keukenhof is the worlds largest bulb flower park. They have over 4.5 million tulips in 100 varieties, 7 million flowers bulbs are planted, more than 2,500 trees in 87 varieties and has 15km of footpaths to enjoy the flowers. I was lucky enough to visit the Keukenhof in 2011 and I was in disbelief at the variety of flowers. I put a few photos down below for your viewing pleasure.

Flowers at the Keukenhof Keukenhof flowers Flowers in Holland

Fear not, we don't spend all our time frolicking through the tulips on this tour. We also ride the fietspaden (bike paths) to explore the coastal region of the country and even ride through the dunes outside Zandvoort. Not to mention seeing the famous windmills and canals of this gorgeous country.

The dunes in Nehterlands Holland windmills Canals in Holland

I think what makes Holland the perfect place for a European bike tour is how flat it is! You get to see so much more of the country when you don't have to worry about struggling up steeps hills and also the diversity of the landscape is quite stunning and unexpected. At least I was blown away by Holland!

Till next time, start thinking Holland Budget for 2013!

Your friendly Holland biker,

Jonathan

Biker Bliss in the Black Hills

Tuesday, August 14, 2012 by Austin-Lehman Adventure Guides

Bikers in the Black Hills

Howdy Folks,

Cowboy Corey and Hurricane Carrie checking in from the Black Hills of South Dakota where we are getting our adventures in order for the upcoming Black Hills family vacations!  We were welcomed to the rolling hills with the thunderous tune of motorcycles, where over half a million riders flock every year for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.  Carrie and I were so delighted by the scene that we took to the winding roads on a Harley, celebrating this extraordinary environment in true rally fashion.  We can’t wait to share our passion for this place with you all, from the bona fide western cities of Sturgis and Deadwood to the Presidential faces that Defined America carved into Mount Rushmore.

Above all, The George S. Mickelson Trail is the pinnacle experience of the Black Hills Trip; with 109 miles of trail meandering through prairies, past granite mountain views, heavily timbered forests, and ghostly deserted mining towns the experience is paramount.  The Burlington Northern Rail Line was abandoned in 1983 which passes through the heart of the Black Hills.  With the Support of Governor George S. Mickelson the rails were removed and a bike path was born in 1991.  The rails to trails project was completed in 1998, spanning 109 miles with more than 100 converted railroad bridges and four hard rock tunnels this trail is a must for anyone who enjoys adventure via pedal power.

Ride on,

Cowboy Corey and Hurricane Carrie

The Romantic Road of Germany was a route created in 1950, as a desperate attempt for Germany to rebuild their tourism. Original visitors were mainly families and friends of the American Soldiers who were based in Southern Germany.  This route, although a newer innovation, passes neatly through historical and medieval towns and points of interests, which has raised foreign interest and touristic appeal for over 62 years now.  The trail from Würzburg to Füssen is a must experience activity during your Europe Adventure Vacation.  What better way to explore this trek through time then upon two wheels, enjoying a relaxing ride through history as you breath in the fresh air and soak up the stories of time.

Your Europe Bike Trip with Austin Lehman through the Romantic Road will begin in Nördlingen. This is the only remaining walled medieval town in Germany.  Less crowded then the other two major towns makes Nördlingen an appealing place to visit.  The interest around this city only begins with the fact that it is built in the crater of a meteorite with a tower created of the rock that originally formed the massive crater.  Here you can also explore crooked streets, a 14th century wall, and retreat at the end of the day to your beautiful hotel with modern accommodations.  Linked to the historic wing of the monastery church, the NH Klösterle Nördlingen is located in the center of the old town on the Romantic Road and is the perfect location for a peaceful slumber.

Germany Family Vacation 4

The next location on your adventure vacation itinerary will include a saunter through Dinkelsbühl, and a nice relaxing ride through pastures and fields of sunflowers to the town of Rothenburg.  Activities also include watching a falcon flight show at the Schillingsfürst Castle, and a nice lunch at the quaint café in front.  When you arrive in Rothenburg you will be in awe of the vibrant cliff-side gardens, amazing art, and fascinating museums.  Stroll through the city during your night tour to learn a bit more about the town, and retreat at the end of the evening to Hotel Markusturm.  A historical customs house back in 1264, Hotel Markusturm is an enchanting location in a medieval town. Eight centuries later, it has been transformed into a hotel for visitors from all over the world.

After leaving the large town of Rotherburg you will then visit another one of the largest towns at Bad Mergentheim.  With its’ days dated back to the Roman era, this spa resort town is a must see marvel when riding the Romantic Roads.  From stories of nights and rebellion to relaxing in 5-star resorts, you have never felt as good as you will in Bad Mergentheim. Next in the town of Wertheim you will pedal beneath a thick forest canopy along the meandering path of the Tauber River.  This medieval village captures the Viking spirit with its’ glassworks, Franconian wine, and history of castles and fortresses.

Your Austin Lehman Adventure will finish off your Europe Bike Trip in the town of Frankfurt.  This is the main metropolis and financial and trade city with some hustle and bustle to get your gears going after your peaceful and relaxing vacation.  Bask in the vastness of the skyscrapers, and find refuge in a local pub.  Explore the history of the city and visit the Kaiserdom.  You may even want to hang out a couple days after your tour to try some brauts and brews at Octoberfest!  A perfect finish to a perfect adventure vacation with Austin Lehman Adventures.

Beehive Basin

Dear Our Austin-Lehman Guides: James, John, & Patrick~

Carter, Cal, Stewart, and I would like to give you all a heart felt thank you for an excellent adventure in Big Sky Country and Yellowstone National Park.  We still can't believe what an amazing job you guys did making sure we all had everything we needed and wanted (there's a difference between the two!).  This trip was a big departure for me, a "read a book on the beach" kind of girl, and I was nervous that the boys (and I) could keep up.  No worries about Stewart.  :)  We felt inspired by you to try everything, and never felt pressured.  Your enthusiasm was contagious.  The hike to Beehive Basin was well worth the effort.  Iced coffee 1/2 way up certainly did not hurt.  I almost tackled you guys when you walked out with those trays, but then no one would have gotten coffee.  I can close my eyes and see those hillsides filled with gorgeous wildflowers and am so happy I'll have that memory forever.

Stewart and Cal had a blast whitewater rafting, and Carter appreciated your offer to take him swimming that day.  It was very sweet of you to encourage him.   While Carter was unsure about rafting, Cal was nervous about riding a horse.  Bless him, he made it through, albeit sideways.  I do believe both boys came home taller and more confident.  They learned so much about Montana and Yellowstone, and it all came from the conversations you had with us.  A vacation and an education...a parent's dream.

Horseback riding in Paradise Valley

Finally, we feel so blessed that we now have new friends from Minneapolis, Boston, & Oklahoma City.  Great job matching up families!  We miss them already.  The Whitmire Family wishes the three of you much happiness and success.  You deserve it. You make a great team!

Most sincerely,

Catherine Whitmire

Can You Tell the Difference Between a Black and a Grizzly Bear?

Wednesday, August 1, 2012 by Kasey Austin

As a guide in Yellowstone National Park, it’s very important for myself as well as my guests to be able to tell the differences between a black bear and a grizzly bear. Why? In a bear encounter on a trail, you handle a grizzly bear differently than a black bear, and this handling can be the difference between a peaceful encounter and a more unpleasant experience. Read on to see if you came up with the same major differences between blacks and grizzlies that I did…

First of all, did you think that you could tell the difference between a black and a grizzly by the color and size? Well, maybe – but this doesn’t always work. Despite the “black” bear’s given name, it can actually range in color from blonde to black and everything in between. The same goes for a grizzly, which most people think of as being  a brown bear. The size is also a good indicator of the species…sometimes. Grizzlies are usually bigger than black bears in their full grown state, but this isn’t always the case. I’ve seen some pretty huge black bears in my time in the Park! Let’s move on to discover the physical differences between a black and a grizzly.

Yellowstone Family Adventure - Grizzly Bear

The number one thing I look for first and foremost is the telltale hump between a grizzly bear’s shoulders. A black bear will not have that hump, but in comparison to a grizzly bear, it will appear to slump. And a black bear’s back end, or rump, will appear to be higher than its front end. When it comes down to it, I think to myself “Grizzly Bear = Hump, Black Bear = Rump”. You can imagine how the kids on our Yellowstone Family Adventure have fun with this word play!

Secondly, I look at the face/head of the bear. When looking at the bear from the side, you will notice that a black bear has a straight face profile while a grizzly has a dished face profile. Also, a grizzly has short, round ears while a black bear has taller, longer ears.

Yellowstone Family Adventure - Black Bear

Last but not least, you can tell by a bear’s claws as to whether it’s a grizzly or a black. A grizzly’s long, light-colored claws are good for digging while a black bear’s short, dark claws are perfect for climbing trees. However, if you can tell which kind of bear you’re looking at by its claws, you are FAR too close to that bear for comfort! Always stay at least 100 yards (the length of a football field) away from any bear if you can help it. I always use “The Thumb Rule” with the kids on my trips. With a bear (or any wildlife) if you stick your arm straight out in front of you with your thumb up, your thumb should cover the entire bear which means you’re far enough away for safety. If the bear appears around the edges of your thumb, it’s time to slowly back up to get to a safer distance.

There you have it, a full list of physical characteristics for when you head out on your next Austin-Lehman Montana or Wyoming Adventure. Remember, you can’t always tell a grizzly and a black bear apart from their size and color, but you should be able to see the differences in the “hump” and “rump,” face profile, ears, and claws.

Your friendly bear-lover,

Kasey Austin

Places to Visit in Spain While You Are On Your Spain Bike Tour

RI-00040-At-DJ-06

Barcellona, Madrid, Seville, and Granada; all cities you thought you would miss on your upcoming adventure tour through Spain.  Just to name a few of the gorgeous and breathtaking cities that the historic Country of Spain has become famous for.  As you plan your dream adventure vacation of a lifetime to visit La Rioja and the Navarra provinces of Northern Spain, you have probably also wondered what it would be like to visit some areas not on the itinerary.  The splendor of an Austin-Lehman Adventure tour is that you will be sure to see the best that each location you visit, has to offer.  If the travel bug has bit you, and you are able to spend some time before and/or after your adventure tour, you should definitely check out some of the other local activities and antique cities that the striking country of Spain has to offer.

RI-00023-Fb-TL-

Your Spain Bike Tour will not fall short of your expectations as you meander through the city of historic Pamplona on a guided tour, where the running of the bulls is held.  You will also trek along the ancient pilgrimage route of Camino De Santiago, reveling in the beauty of the nearby villages.  You can also plan on a toast in Olite, wine capital of the Navarra province.  You will then bask in the views of the cliffs overlooking Rioja’s Cidacos valley, taking in views of almond groves and sheep laden meadows.  A full adventure complete with memorable biking adventures, the most palatable foods you can imagine, and the most delectable wines you have ever had the pleasure of sampling.  While Austin Lehman has taken the guesswork out of your next Spain vacation, you can still give the planning a go if you choose to check out some other parts of the country while you are visiting.  Book your flight for a week before or after your Austin-Lehman Adventure, so you have some time to plan some explorations of your own.

RI-00031-Em-KB-

If you happen to be planning your Spain vacation with Austin-Lehman, during the weeks between July 6th -14th you should definitely plan some time to visit the San Fermin Festival to see the famous running of the bulls. Enjoy wonderful music, delicious foods, exciting dance, and stunning fireworks. If you happen to miss the dates, your tour will still provide you with tons of stories and images so you will be able to practically hear the hoofs charging. You should also check out the Pamplona Cathedral, the brilliant stonework and gothic ancient interior is a site not to be missed.   If you loved the Cathedral you should also take some time to check out Monasterio de Leyre which oldest records of the site date back to 842.  The natural ambiance surrounding the Monasterio is also offers a gorgeous view as well. If you are not looking to visit churches you still have tons of museums, observatories, landmarks, and parks to visit and explore during your cycling tours

RI-00021-Fb-TL-05

If you are able to escape for more then a week before you tour you should also check out a few other cities.  While visiting Madrid you can attend a soccer game at Santiago Bernabeu, or visit the famous impressive main plaza with delicious cafes and newsworthy bars.  If you missed the running of the bulls in Pamplona you can watch a bullfight at the Ventas bullring.  At night the town transforms into a party city with eclectic mixes of music, and the town just keeps dancing.  Lastly don’t forget to start and end your day with a chocolate dipped churro.

RI-00028-Em-KB-

Anyone looking to view some spectacular Spainish architecture on their adventure vaction will be sure to put Barcelona on the must see list.  The Hospital de Sant Pau and Gaudi’s famous unfinished basilica Segrada Familia with modernist design and a short walk down Avenida de Gaudi, are windows of beauty looking through to the past. If you are also into art you can visit the Salvador Dali museum, or visit the Picasso Museum.  If you just want to wander around you can stroll the streets of the Gothic Quarter or pass through Barcelona’s famous streets of Las Ramblas featuring street performers, endless shops, and vibrant atmosphere.

RI-00022-Ab-DJNauta-00

No matter which cities you trek through before and/or after your cycling tour there are a few activities you need to have in mind, set to accomplish.  From enjoying tapas; specifically a delicious snack with your drinks out on the town, to catching a bull fight, soccer game, or visiting the splendid Alhambra Moorish Fortress located in the hills of Granada. Stop by the gardens of Seville to witness an authentic flamenco show fully packed with culture, folk music, and drunken gypsies.  No matter what you plan for your adventure travel it is always great to plan a couple of extra days to explore other gems that the county has to offer.  No tour can capture every bit of wonder that a location has to offer so take some time out to visit some other locations that you just can’t live without visiting.

Things to do in Bozeman, Montana

Wednesday, July 25, 2012 by Austin-Lehman Adventure Guides

Bozeman, Montana

On all the Austin-Lehman trips that I have led, I encounter a multitude of questions; from the size of the park, to what time are the animals released from their cage (however, this one is not often asked). But without fail one question that is always brought up is, "What can I do around Bozeman before or after my awesome vacation?" My recommendation would first include rephrasing the question to what can't I do around this town!?

If you consider yourself a history buff, or are seeking the inner child in you head to the Museum of the Rockies. You are instantly surrounded by the dinosaurs that walked in the same streets as you are now! Also, there are a ton of other historical artifacts from the pioneer times as well! While moseying around town, simply walk down main street for a few hours. There are great stores for some last minute gear purchases or finally get that kayak to start your hobby (inspired from your Austin-Lehman adventure)! Also on Main you can grab some of the best food Montana has to offer including the famed, Ted's Montana Grill for a hearty cut of bison steak raised on one of Mr. Turner's farms! Also those looking to stay out a little later can indulge in the nightlife of Bozeman that more often than not will include live music and dancing!
If you would like to push yourself a little bit more towards the outdoorsy lifestyle of the area your options only continue to grow! A short drive to Big Sky resort can have you flying downhill on a mountain bike or Zipping through the sky on their newly installed zip line systems. Also a quick call to the office or one of your guides can get a connection to a fly fishing guide that has newly been added to the Austin-Lehman family! All the local shops also rent everything from bikes to paddle boards! So turn an afternoon into an adventure taking some rented or purchased gear into Hyalite Canyon just outside of town. Paddle the reservoir or bike the seemingly endless trails! In short, Bozeman is an excellent town to start or finish off your Yellowstone National Park Vacation or Montana family adventure offering fun for all ages and interests! Myself and the rest of the guide staff all look forward to meeting you future adventurers!

Cheers,

Patrick McGarry

Top 5 Tricks for Surviving the Dry Desert Heat

Tuesday, July 24, 2012 by Melissa Ladvala

Let’s be honest, no one is a fan of extreme temperatures!  But harsh weather should not keep you from your adventures. There is a trick to braving the punishing cold temperatures of the Montana winter and exploring in the sweltering heat of an Arizona summer.  On my recent trip to Havasupai Falls, this fair-skinned Montana girl learned a few things about staying cool in the heat.  Here are my top five ways for beating the dry desert heat of the southwest:

5.  Wear a hat.  A wide brimmed hat will keep the sun off your face, ears, scalp and neck and is the best choice for beating the heat.   A lightweight baseball cap will at least protect your face and your scalp.

4. Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours.  The peak heat hours are between 10 AM and 4 PM, so limiting your sun exposure and strenuous activities during these hours will help you stay significantly cooler.  Early mornings and dusk will be your favorite hours of the day for activity.  The sun is not beating down on you, temperatures are moderate and this is the best time for physical activity.  If you are heading out on a desert hike, go early!

3. Keep your neck cool.  Wet a bandana or a light weight neck gaiter and put it around your neck.  Keeping your neck cool will help trick your body into thinking it is a cool.  It feels fantastic and this will also keep the sun off your neck.

2. Wear sunscreen. There is absolutely nothing worse than being sunburnt and feeling hot.  Do not take a chance.  Always apply sunscreen early in the day, do not wait until you feel a little burnt.  By the time you realize you might be getting toasted, you are probably toasted.  I recommend an oil free sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher.  You will need to reapply often especially if you are sweating or in the water, every two hours is a good rule to follow.  Do not forget to apply the sunscreen to your face, ears and tops of your feet.  Always use a SPF lip balm so your lips do not burn.  It really is better to be safe than sorry, so slater it on!

1.  Hydrate, hydrate and then hydrate more!  The absolute best way to keep your body cool is to drink lots of water.  Regardless of your activity level in extreme temperatures you will need to drink plenty of water, if you are active you will need to drink even more.  Don’t wait until you are thirsty to have a drink.  I highly recommend a day backpack with a hydration system in it, that way your water stays cool and is always very accessible.

I hope you find these tips helpful on your next desert adventure.  If you have any tips or tricks for keeping cool, leave us a comment and let us know!

Josh rafting in CanadaJosh hikingJosh on a glacier trek

Greetings travelers I am Josh Fried and I live in Los Angeles, California. I love travelling and have been doing it ever since i was a little pipsqueak. I am now 15 years old and have been all around the country (not the world....yet). I thought traveling was just an activity where you visit a destination and meet people and experience attractions. For me that all changed last year! About a year ago I went on a trip with Austin-Lehman Adventures, we had discovered them several years before but had never had the time to go on one. My Dad and I ended up going on their Canadian Rockies family adventure. Saying we both had the time of our life is an understatement, we had the best time in the world! The area was beautiful, the locals were friendly and best of all we had three amazing guides that knew the area better then the back of their hand. Overall it was the best vacation I've ever had. A few months ago we were planning our summer and my parents asked me and my brother what we wanted to do. The first thing that came to my mind was “how about an Austin-Lehman trip”. My dad said “you should decide which one you want to do” so I was flipping through the catalog and I stumbled across their cycling tour of the Black Hills in South Dakota. It looked so much fun! Biking through the Black Hills, seeing Mount Rushmore, It sounded so much fun. I don't depart for another three weeks, yet I'm am jumping out of my skin in excitement. I love biking and have heard grand stories of the Mickelson Trail from friends, I am also a big history buff and can't wait to see landmarks like Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. I can't wait for my next adventure with Austin-Lehman.

See you on the trails!

Josh

The Emerald City

Friday, July 20, 2012 by Melissa Ladvala

What is better than an adventure vacation on the San Juan Islands in Washington?  Spending a few days in Seattle before heading out on your trip!  Seattle, Washington is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States and it is the largest city on the west coast north of San Francisco.  It is an adventurous city at heart, perfectly situated near pristine rivers, lush forests, plenty of lakes and gorgeous snowcapped mountains.  On top of being an adventurer’s paradise Seattle has plenty of music, art and culture to keep you coming back for more.

Downtown Seattle is a hub of great food, sophisticated shops, quirky pubs and plenty to see and do.  Pike Place Market is one of Seattle’s most iconic places and should not be missed.  Stop and watch the fishmongers throw fresh fish impressive distances with perfect accuracy.  These guys put on quite a show!  This is the perfect place to spend some time strolling the labyrinth of amazing handicrafts and marveling at the amazing row of fresh flowers. You never know what you will find around the next corner in the market.  Just across the street from Pike Place Market you can get a latte at the original Starbucks!

Seattle’s most famous landmark is, of course, the Space Needle.  This famous tower was constructed for the World’s Fair in 1962.  Take a ride up the elevator to the observation deck for gorgeous views of the city skyline and on a clear day you can also see some of the gorgeous mountains in the area.  One of the most unique features of the Space Needle is the rotating restaurant, not only can you get 360 degree views but you can also enjoy a delicious meal.  The Space Needle is located at the Seattle Center which also features The Pacific Science Center, The EMP Museum and many other attractions.

The Seattle waterfront is another great place to spend a day.  On the waterfront you will find the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Sculpture Park, The Tillicum Village Cultural Center and the newly constructed Great Wheel, the tallest Ferris wheel on the west coast!  This is also a great area to find a bowl of delightful clam chowder and watch the ships roll in and out.

Getting around Seattle is made easy with the monorail going between downtown and the Seattle Center and the light rail that goes all the way to Sea-Tac airport.  There is so much to see and do in Seattle that you will have no problem filling your days before heading off on your adventure in the San Juan Islands!
