Beehive Basin

Dear Our Austin-Lehman Guides: James, John, & Patrick~

Carter, Cal, Stewart, and I would like to give you all a heart felt thank you for an excellent adventure in Big Sky Country and Yellowstone National Park.  We still can't believe what an amazing job you guys did making sure we all had everything we needed and wanted (there's a difference between the two!).  This trip was a big departure for me, a "read a book on the beach" kind of girl, and I was nervous that the boys (and I) could keep up.  No worries about Stewart.  :)  We felt inspired by you to try everything, and never felt pressured.  Your enthusiasm was contagious.  The hike to Beehive Basin was well worth the effort.  Iced coffee 1/2 way up certainly did not hurt.  I almost tackled you guys when you walked out with those trays, but then no one would have gotten coffee.  I can close my eyes and see those hillsides filled with gorgeous wildflowers and am so happy I'll have that memory forever.

Stewart and Cal had a blast whitewater rafting, and Carter appreciated your offer to take him swimming that day.  It was very sweet of you to encourage him.   While Carter was unsure about rafting, Cal was nervous about riding a horse.  Bless him, he made it through, albeit sideways.  I do believe both boys came home taller and more confident.  They learned so much about Montana and Yellowstone, and it all came from the conversations you had with us.  A vacation and an education...a parent's dream.

Horseback riding in Paradise Valley

Finally, we feel so blessed that we now have new friends from Minneapolis, Boston, & Oklahoma City.  Great job matching up families!  We miss them already.  The Whitmire Family wishes the three of you much happiness and success.  You deserve it. You make a great team!

Most sincerely,

Catherine Whitmire

No adventure is quite complete in a dessert paradise like this without some off-roading by Hummer Jeep.  You will explore Slick Rock over petrified sand dunes, as the wheels of the jeep grip to the sandpaper like surfaces of the dunes.  Unwind at the end of the day with a relaxing deep tissue massage, and a feast of finger-licking fares before retreating to your comfortable bed for hours of peaceful slumber.

The Narrows

Monday, July 30, 2012 by Mindy Vanderhoof

This infamous hike in Zion National Park is no ordinary hiking vacation; the trail is actually the Virginia River, the same river that has carved this unique canyon.   Pack your water shoes and dry bags as you embark into this narrow slot canyon, for one third of the hike the river extends canyon wall to canyon wall.  The sheer vertical red walls stretch for the heavens as you traverse through the murky waters, your feet navigating you over the large, round basalt rocks.

Timing is everything in the Narrows.  If the water is too high, or if the snowmelt or thunderstorms causes flash floods, the Narrows can be an extremely dangerous place, stranding you there for hours, or even days.  This is very important to consider when you are planning your Southwest Utah Adventure and when finding a guide for this section of the park.

For those you choose to take on the Narrows, the rewards are sweet.  The views are incredible, and the sense of achievement is unparalleled!

Happy Trekking,

Mindy Teini

Hiking to Delicate Arch

Thursday, July 26, 2012 by Jonathan Burnham

Delicate Arch - Utah Adventure Travel

Delicate Arch is probably what most people picture when they think of Arches National Park and for good reason! This 65-foot freestanding natural arch is formed of Entrada Sandstone and has been worn away by weathering and erosion. Hiking to this landmark is a pretty decent hike, but is only about 1.5mi from the trailhead. From the trail head you can see the remains of the John Welsey Wolfe Ranch, which was built in 1888 and abandoned in 1910. Along the way you'll pass by an excellant Ute petroglyph that depics horses and a bighorn sheep hunt, as well as Frame Arch; Frame Arch is a great spot to photograph Delciate Arch. Once you get to the arch the La Sal Mountains are framed to the southeast. Arches National Park is just five miles north of Moab and is one of our hikes on our Utah Adventure Vacations

Now get out there and see it in "real life"

Jonathan

Places to Visit in Spain While You Are On Your Spain Bike Tour

RI-00040-At-DJ-06

Barcellona, Madrid, Seville, and Granada; all cities you thought you would miss on your upcoming adventure tour through Spain.  Just to name a few of the gorgeous and breathtaking cities that the historic Country of Spain has become famous for.  As you plan your dream adventure vacation of a lifetime to visit La Rioja and the Navarra provinces of Northern Spain, you have probably also wondered what it would be like to visit some areas not on the itinerary.  The splendor of an Austin-Lehman Adventure tour is that you will be sure to see the best that each location you visit, has to offer.  If the travel bug has bit you, and you are able to spend some time before and/or after your adventure tour, you should definitely check out some of the other local activities and antique cities that the striking country of Spain has to offer.

RI-00023-Fb-TL-

Your Spain Bike Tour will not fall short of your expectations as you meander through the city of historic Pamplona on a guided tour, where the running of the bulls is held.  You will also trek along the ancient pilgrimage route of Camino De Santiago, reveling in the beauty of the nearby villages.  You can also plan on a toast in Olite, wine capital of the Navarra province.  You will then bask in the views of the cliffs overlooking Rioja’s Cidacos valley, taking in views of almond groves and sheep laden meadows.  A full adventure complete with memorable biking adventures, the most palatable foods you can imagine, and the most delectable wines you have ever had the pleasure of sampling.  While Austin Lehman has taken the guesswork out of your next Spain vacation, you can still give the planning a go if you choose to check out some other parts of the country while you are visiting.  Book your flight for a week before or after your Austin-Lehman Adventure, so you have some time to plan some explorations of your own.

RI-00031-Em-KB-

If you happen to be planning your Spain vacation with Austin-Lehman, during the weeks between July 6th -14th you should definitely plan some time to visit the San Fermin Festival to see the famous running of the bulls. Enjoy wonderful music, delicious foods, exciting dance, and stunning fireworks. If you happen to miss the dates, your tour will still provide you with tons of stories and images so you will be able to practically hear the hoofs charging. You should also check out the Pamplona Cathedral, the brilliant stonework and gothic ancient interior is a site not to be missed.   If you loved the Cathedral you should also take some time to check out Monasterio de Leyre which oldest records of the site date back to 842.  The natural ambiance surrounding the Monasterio is also offers a gorgeous view as well. If you are not looking to visit churches you still have tons of museums, observatories, landmarks, and parks to visit and explore during your cycling tours

RI-00021-Fb-TL-05

If you are able to escape for more then a week before you tour you should also check out a few other cities.  While visiting Madrid you can attend a soccer game at Santiago Bernabeu, or visit the famous impressive main plaza with delicious cafes and newsworthy bars.  If you missed the running of the bulls in Pamplona you can watch a bullfight at the Ventas bullring.  At night the town transforms into a party city with eclectic mixes of music, and the town just keeps dancing.  Lastly don’t forget to start and end your day with a chocolate dipped churro.

RI-00028-Em-KB-

Anyone looking to view some spectacular Spainish architecture on their adventure vaction will be sure to put Barcelona on the must see list.  The Hospital de Sant Pau and Gaudi’s famous unfinished basilica Segrada Familia with modernist design and a short walk down Avenida de Gaudi, are windows of beauty looking through to the past. If you are also into art you can visit the Salvador Dali museum, or visit the Picasso Museum.  If you just want to wander around you can stroll the streets of the Gothic Quarter or pass through Barcelona’s famous streets of Las Ramblas featuring street performers, endless shops, and vibrant atmosphere.

RI-00022-Ab-DJNauta-00

No matter which cities you trek through before and/or after your cycling tour there are a few activities you need to have in mind, set to accomplish.  From enjoying tapas; specifically a delicious snack with your drinks out on the town, to catching a bull fight, soccer game, or visiting the splendid Alhambra Moorish Fortress located in the hills of Granada. Stop by the gardens of Seville to witness an authentic flamenco show fully packed with culture, folk music, and drunken gypsies.  No matter what you plan for your adventure travel it is always great to plan a couple of extra days to explore other gems that the county has to offer.  No tour can capture every bit of wonder that a location has to offer so take some time out to visit some other locations that you just can’t live without visiting.

Things to do in Bozeman, Montana

Wednesday, July 25, 2012 by Austin-Lehman Adventure Guides

Bozeman, Montana

On all the Austin-Lehman trips that I have led, I encounter a multitude of questions; from the size of the park, to what time are the animals released from their cage (however, this one is not often asked). But without fail one question that is always brought up is, "What can I do around Bozeman before or after my awesome vacation?" My recommendation would first include rephrasing the question to what can't I do around this town!?

If you consider yourself a history buff, or are seeking the inner child in you head to the Museum of the Rockies. You are instantly surrounded by the dinosaurs that walked in the same streets as you are now! Also, there are a ton of other historical artifacts from the pioneer times as well! While moseying around town, simply walk down main street for a few hours. There are great stores for some last minute gear purchases or finally get that kayak to start your hobby (inspired from your Austin-Lehman adventure)! Also on Main you can grab some of the best food Montana has to offer including the famed, Ted's Montana Grill for a hearty cut of bison steak raised on one of Mr. Turner's farms! Also those looking to stay out a little later can indulge in the nightlife of Bozeman that more often than not will include live music and dancing!
If you would like to push yourself a little bit more towards the outdoorsy lifestyle of the area your options only continue to grow! A short drive to Big Sky resort can have you flying downhill on a mountain bike or Zipping through the sky on their newly installed zip line systems. Also a quick call to the office or one of your guides can get a connection to a fly fishing guide that has newly been added to the Austin-Lehman family! All the local shops also rent everything from bikes to paddle boards! So turn an afternoon into an adventure taking some rented or purchased gear into Hyalite Canyon just outside of town. Paddle the reservoir or bike the seemingly endless trails! In short, Bozeman is an excellent town to start or finish off your Yellowstone National Park Vacation or Montana family adventure offering fun for all ages and interests! Myself and the rest of the guide staff all look forward to meeting you future adventurers!

Cheers,

Patrick McGarry

Josh rafting in CanadaJosh hikingJosh on a glacier trek

Greetings travelers I am Josh Fried and I live in Los Angeles, California. I love travelling and have been doing it ever since i was a little pipsqueak. I am now 15 years old and have been all around the country (not the world....yet). I thought traveling was just an activity where you visit a destination and meet people and experience attractions. For me that all changed last year! About a year ago I went on a trip with Austin-Lehman Adventures, we had discovered them several years before but had never had the time to go on one. My Dad and I ended up going on their Canadian Rockies family adventure. Saying we both had the time of our life is an understatement, we had the best time in the world! The area was beautiful, the locals were friendly and best of all we had three amazing guides that knew the area better then the back of their hand. Overall it was the best vacation I've ever had. A few months ago we were planning our summer and my parents asked me and my brother what we wanted to do. The first thing that came to my mind was “how about an Austin-Lehman trip”. My dad said “you should decide which one you want to do” so I was flipping through the catalog and I stumbled across their cycling tour of the Black Hills in South Dakota. It looked so much fun! Biking through the Black Hills, seeing Mount Rushmore, It sounded so much fun. I don't depart for another three weeks, yet I'm am jumping out of my skin in excitement. I love biking and have heard grand stories of the Mickelson Trail from friends, I am also a big history buff and can't wait to see landmarks like Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. I can't wait for my next adventure with Austin-Lehman.

See you on the trails!

Josh

Exploring South Dakota on Two Wheels Adventure Style

Saturday, July 21, 2012 by Carol Austin

When most people think of "riding" in South Dakota an image of a Harley Davidson comes to mind. On  South Dakota cycling tours you'll explore the "Badlands" by pedaling on two wheels!

Rapid City is often called the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and the "City of Presidents". Your adventure begins and ends in Rapid City. Named after the creek that runs nearby Rapid Creek.

What can I do on my South Dakota vacation? Many ask. As an adventure vacation destination there are  many highlights; Mount Rushmore, Chief Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, Reptile Gardens, The Badlands, Wall Drug, Deadwood, The Passion Play and of course the Sturgis Bike Rally. The pine covered mountains and prarie lands are abundant in wildlfe and natural attractions. You can also try your hand at Texas Hold'em; Slots, Progressive Poker or Black Jack!

When it comes to cycling tours, what most dont know is that the Mickelson Trail is on the list of many cyclsts to do list. The trail offers a great way to get out and explore the countryside of South Dakota. Part of the Rails to Trails, the Mickelson Trail is an old railbed. constructed in 1890 it operated as a dedicated route until 1983. You can cycle the entire trail in one day or split it out into a few days. The trail was named after the state governonr George S Mickelson. Established in this cycling trail Adventure is a total of 110 miles.

And if you would like to try some good local cuisine a visit to Kevin Costner's restaurant or bar & grill. Located on the main street of Deadwood.

I will leave you with "Where the heck is Wall Drug?"

Carol Austin

The Emerald City

What is better than an adventure vacation on the San Juan Islands in Washington?  Spending a few days in Seattle before heading out on your trip!  Seattle, Washington is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States and it is the largest city on the west coast north of San Francisco.  It is an adventurous city at heart, perfectly situated near pristine rivers, lush forests, plenty of lakes and gorgeous snowcapped mountains.  On top of being an adventurer’s paradise Seattle has plenty of music, art and culture to keep you coming back for more.

Downtown Seattle is a hub of great food, sophisticated shops, quirky pubs and plenty to see and do.  Pike Place Market is one of Seattle’s most iconic places and should not be missed.  Stop and watch the fishmongers throw fresh fish impressive distances with perfect accuracy.  These guys put on quite a show!  This is the perfect place to spend some time strolling the labyrinth of amazing handicrafts and marveling at the amazing row of fresh flowers. You never know what you will find around the next corner in the market.  Just across the street from Pike Place Market you can get a latte at the original Starbucks!

Seattle’s most famous landmark is, of course, the Space Needle.  This famous tower was constructed for the World’s Fair in 1962.  Take a ride up the elevator to the observation deck for gorgeous views of the city skyline and on a clear day you can also see some of the gorgeous mountains in the area.  One of the most unique features of the Space Needle is the rotating restaurant, not only can you get 360 degree views but you can also enjoy a delicious meal.  The Space Needle is located at the Seattle Center which also features The Pacific Science Center, The EMP Museum and many other attractions.

The Seattle waterfront is another great place to spend a day.  On the waterfront you will find the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Sculpture Park, The Tillicum Village Cultural Center and the newly constructed Great Wheel, the tallest Ferris wheel on the west coast!  This is also a great area to find a bowl of delightful clam chowder and watch the ships roll in and out.

Getting around Seattle is made easy with the monorail going between downtown and the Seattle Center and the light rail that goes all the way to Sea-Tac airport.  There is so much to see and do in Seattle that you will have no problem filling your days before heading off on your adventure in the San Juan Islands!

Host City Spotlight: Calgary

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 by Mindy Vanderhoof

File:Cgy saddledome.jpg

With all of the great Adventures that we offer, and the cool places we get to see, sometimes the host city (the city you fly into or out of) can get overlooked!  These cities are often great destination, and when you are looking into Alberta adventure travel, Calgary is no different!

As for what to do, the possibilities are endless!  First, there is the Heritage Park, which is a living historic site/amusement park! It gives visitors an interactive look into the past, and how the "west was once!"  It is great for all ages.  There is also The Calgary Zoo, which boasts more than 1,000 animals, including Kamala, the famous painting elephant.  The Zoo also has Botanical Gardens and a Prehistoric Park.  I love Zoo's so I always like to see if there is one at my destination!

The Calgary Tower held the ongoing flames of the 1988 Olympics, and since then has become a wonderful tourist attraction.  And don’t forget about Canada's Olympic Park!  There is also a great Aero- Space Museum.  Glenbow Museum, the largest museum in Western Canada, exhibits everything from the traditions of tattooing to life in different tribes in Western Africa.

If you are looking into hikes, you should check out Edworthy Park and Douglas Fir Trail!  The views from the top of the hill are breathtaking!   And it might be good practice before your guides pick you up for your adventure vacation packages in the Canadian Rockies!

Things to do in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Tuesday, July 17, 2012 by Jonathan Burnham

Biking in the Tetons

Today I wanted to talk about and share one of my favorite towns in the world, Jackson, Wyoming. With a population just under 10,000 and located just outside Grand Teton National it is prime time for adventurers. I was lucky enough to guide our Wyoming Family- Yellowstone/Teton adventure this past week, which starts and ends in the beautiful town of Jackson.

Some History on Jackson:
As part of the Hayden Expedition of 1871 and 1872, William Henry Jackson took the first photos of the Tetons and Yellowstone Park.  His photos, along with paintings by Tom Moran, convinced Congress to protect Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park became the first National Park in 1872.  Grand Teton National Park was created in 1920 and greatly expanded in 1950 by the generous efforts of John D. Rockefeller, who purchased and then donated over 30,000 acres. The Town of Jackson was named in 1894,  some of the early buildings remain and can be found throughout the area of the Town Square.

What to do in Jackson:
1) Bike Antelope Flats, it is a great and easy ride! Enjoy the scenery with the Tetons in view the whole bike ride and make sure you stop by the T. A. Moulton Barn. Often referred to as the most photographed barn in America, I think the backdrop of the Tetons soaring up might have something to do with that.

T.A. Moulton Barn, Wyoming

2) Cable car ride, take the tram to the top of Jackson Hole Resort for some amazing views!

Jackson Hole Resort

3) Look Up! If you head to Jackson and don't take the time to look at the stars over the Tetons, then you are missing out.

Stars over the Tetons

4) Yee Haw! Head on down to the Jackson Rodeo, experience a real wild west rodeo!

Jackson Rodeo

5) Jenny Lake, just outside Jackson sits this beautiful lake. The Jenny Lake Loop Road is about 5 miles long and can be easily accessed from the Teton Loop Road. There is also a 6.5 mile hike around the lake, which is a pretty flat and easy trail.

Jenny Lake, Wyoming

One more thing, I'm sure you'll be hungry after all these activities... I recommend the Trio for dinner, they are an American Bistro with delicious cuisine. Save some room for dessert, the s'more pie is amazing!

Dessert at Trio in Jackson, Wyoming

That's it, 5 fun things to do in Jackson! Now all you need to do is go experience it for yourself! Austin-Lehman offers family and adult trips that show you the best of Grand Teton and Yellostone National Park. Check out our Wyoming Vacations.

Le Cyclisme en France

Wednesday, July 11, 2012 by Melissa Ladvala

France is such a diverse country from the chic metropolitan city of Paris to the windswept dunes of the Normandy beaches to the lavender fields of Provence to the wineries of Burgundy to the picturesque castles of the Loire Valley.  France truly has something to offer everyone and it is the perfect country for your European cycling tours.  There is no better way to experience all that this beautiful country has to offer than on the two wheels of a bicycle.  Not only do you feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face but you can truly take in all the sights and smells on a whole different level.

History Rich Brittany/Normandy

Not only are the Brittany and Normandy regions of France phenomenally beautiful but they offer adventurers a bit of a history lesson.  This area is rich in history dating back to the Roman Empire and also played an important role in World War II.  There will be plenty of time to visit the museums, beaches, battlefields and cemeteries.  Rolling through the historic villages you will be amazed by the half-timbered buildings that have endured the test of time.  Stop along the way and enjoy a savory crepe and a locally distilled cider!  There is no better way to journey to the majestic abbey of Mont St Michel than by bicycle.  You will see it far off in the distance and arrive to marvel at its splendor.  A cycling vacation in the Brittany/Normandy region will leave you craving your next trip to France.

Luscious Provence

Mount Rushmore

Mount Rushmore National Monument.

Gutzon Borglum sculpted Mount Rushmore National Monument in 1941, taking 14 years and a mere million dollars to complete it. Mount Rushmore is now an image that has been captured in countless movies, pictured in tons of books, and snapped a million times over in photos.  The 60-foot high faces located 500 feet above the ground are not fully captured on film or paper. Each head stands a remarkable six stories tall.  Standing in front of the Shrine of Democracy you can see why it has joined the Statue of Liberty and the Stars and Stripes as some of America’s most inspiring symbols.  What better way to learn a bit about America’s history then to pay a visit to Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln during your next South Dakota Vacation

Old West Town of Deadwood

Deadwood, South Dakota (small)

Take a stroll through history while peddling on two wheels through the antique towns of South Dakota.  Pedal the back roads through a sea of open prairies to the National Historic Landmark: the town of Deadwood. With constant restoration, Deadwood is being transformed back into the frontier town that once attracted legends and legions in search of their fortunes.  Come and leave your mark with the famous, or taint the town as the infamous Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Poker Alice.

The Mickelson Trail

MickelsonTrail00019.1

Continue your South Dakota vacation as you ride through the meandering hills, rock tunnels, and railroad bridges that make the Mickelson Trail the perfect adventure for all ages. Roll along with hikers and horseback riders where the steps of historical figures once roamed.  The rolling hills and easy slopes make this an enjoyable ride with views of spruce and ponderosa pine forests. You can turn in at the end of the night in your comfortable Blue Bell Lodge offering mouthwatering home cooking and a night relaxing by the campfire.

Wind Cave National Park

South Dakota-Biking

As one of the early nationally protected parks, and the first one that protected a cave, Wind Cave National Park provides an underground adventure as it winds its way under the prairies located above.   Noted as one of the world’s longest caves, and named for barometric winds at the caves entrance, this adventure provides a labyrinth of underground passageways just waiting to be explored.   After a long day of discovering, indulge at Red Rock River Resort and Spa with a hot stone massage and a delectable meal.

From a Guide’s Perspective: Top 5 Reasons to Go to Yellowstone & the Tetons

Monday, July 2, 2012 by Kasey Austin

After guiding ALA’s Yellowstone-Tetons Adventure for ten weeks straight last summer, I feel that I have some insider knowledge as to why this trip is one of Austin-Lehman’s best products. Read on for some reasons why YOU should look into Yellowstone National Park Vacations with Austin-Lehman!

  1. Two National Parks in One

Many people all over the world want to see Yellowstone National Park, after all it is the world’s first national park and famous for its geothermal features, historic significance, and wildlife. BUT, why not take the trip down to Yellowstone’s neighboring Park which is just as amazing in its awe-inspiring scenery? As a guide, I can’t believe the number of people who visit Yellowstone each year only to skip the gem next door. If you’re going to come out west, take advantage of seeing two national parks in less than 100 miles of each other. You won’t regret it!

  1. Geology/Geography

You will be amazed that neighboring national parks can look completely different from one another! Both have been sculpted in their own individual ways and possess their own reasons as to why they look completely opposite. Yellowstone was created by molten magma and an explosive past while the Tetons have uplifted (and the valley has “sunk”) due to major earthquakes over its history. Glaciers have bulldozed and sculpted the land in both parks for thousands of years creating an unforgettably beautiful landscape. Today we are lucky enough to continue witnessing history in the making in regards to geography (and you will see what I mean by this if you visit both Parks!)

  1. Yes, You Can Have That Dessert After Dinner

You burned a ton of calories today! You just got done kayaking the clear, blue waters of Jackson Lake or biked the back trails behind the third largest hot spring in the world, Grand Prismatic. On this one trip, you will hike, bike, kayak, and raft your way to places like Old Faithful, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, Lake Yellowstone, Colter Bay, the Snake River, and Wilson to name a few. By the end of the day, you’re going to be hungry for a finger lickin’ good meal at a restaurant like Trio Bistro or Teton Pines. Make sure when you sit down for dessert in the dining room of the Old Faithful Inn, you order a Yellowstone Caldera for me! Yum!

  1. Yeehaw! Go Get ‘Em Cowboy!

If you haven’t been out West before, chances are you haven’t witnessed a true western rodeo. In Jackson, Wyoming you will see the best of the best – the cowboys who have been riding since they were old enough to walk and the cowgirls who can race around a set of barrels faster than you can say, “Yippie-Yi-Yay-Ki-Oh, Cowgirl!” All in all, the rodeo is a great time, a little cheesy yes, but a knee-slappin’ great time all the same!  Bring your cowboy hat if you want to fit in with the crowd!

Yellowstone-Tetons Adventure

  1. Lions, Tigers, and Bears, Oh My!

Alright, so maybe Yellowstone and the Tetons don’t have lions or tigers (except maybe the occasional mountain lion), but chances are high that you will see a bear sometime on your week long journey! Also keep an eye out for bison in Hayden Valley, elk near the Madison River, otters in Jackson Lake, and moose in the small town of Moose, WY. The diversity of wildlife in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is unmatched by any place in the continental U.S. and you can consider yourself privileged if you see one or more of the wildlife I mentioned above! A good pair of binoculars is something you will definitely use!

There you have it, my top reasons to look into Yellowstone tours with Austin-Lehman Adventures. Between the jaw-dropping scenery and the abundant wildlife, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Yellowstone and the Tetons. The trips are selling out quickly, but we still have some availability in August – give me a call if you want to know more!

See you on the trails,

Cycling Yellowstone-Tetons

Sunday, July 1, 2012 by Kasey Austin

To help you get inspired to bike it up this summer, I thought I’d share with you some of my past biking adventures that you can experience yourself by jumping on one of our cycling tours in the Yellowstone-Tetons area! Here we go!

Antelope Flats

As the name implies, this bike ride is pretty darn flat which allows you to take in the scenery AND the wildlife as you coast around this back road in Grand Teton National Park.  I’ve seen everything on this ride: moose, bison, pronghorn, fox, coyote – I can almost guarantee that you will see something if you keep your eyes on your surroundings (and the road of course!!) You might even run into a bison jam on the road itself! Your ride ends at the famous and historic T.A. Moulton Barn, so if you’re a photographer, bring your camera!!

Yellowstone-Tetons Adventure

Grand Prismatic Trail

This flat gravel trail takes you the “back way” around the third largest hot spring in the world! Your guides will take you to the absolute best spot to view this colorful hot spring that will leave you awed and amazed. Plus, you get to ride through an area that was burned in the Yellowstone fires of 1988. Now this section of burned area is a beautiful bright green, filled with lodgepole pines as far as the eye can see, with the occasional ghost tree still standing and charred from those fires of nearly 25 years ago!

Yellowstone-Tetons Adventure

Wilson-Teton Village Bike Path

Beginning in the sleepy town of Wilson at the base of the Teton Pass, you’ll cycle from the local park, past the little red school house to a bike trail that passes horse pastures filled with daisies and lupine. From this path, you get a pretty neat view of the ski hill as you bike to the base of the world-renowned Jackson Hole ski resort. Keep an eye out as you cross over the creeks – you just might glimpse a moose’s antlers peeking out from the willows.

Yellowstone-Tetons Adventure

Teton Bike Path

The town of Jackson and the nearby valley (Jackson Hole) are an absolute outdoor Mecca. To keep up with the region’s image of being the ultimate outdoor playground, construction crews are working every summer on improving the valley’s bike paths and extending them from the town and beyond. Cycling on one of these paths directly beneath the towering Tetons is something you will never forget. The mountain range will seem to shift as you move along, sending illusions through your mind. That mountain you thought was the Grand Teton might actually be Teewinot or Mt. Owen! Your ride takes you to Jenny Lake, where the water is so clear you can see the trout swimming in the sparkling depths.

If these bike rides sound tantalizing to you, then you will want to check out our Yellowstone Vacation Packages to plan your next trip! If anything, I hope I can inspire you to grab that old bike in the garage, pump up the air in the tires, and get out for a summer ride on the bike path nearest to you!

See you on the trails,

7 of the strangest foods you can find on vacation!

Thursday, June 28, 2012 by Tour Support Team

Tripe

One of the great things about traveling to a new place is getting to try the local cuisine.  When visiting someplace new, one of the most memorable experiences you can have is to try out the local delicacies.  Combining new tastes with travel can be a great way to vividly remember your trip.  Here at the ALA office, we have sampled some pretty crazy dishes that many people would never even think of eating!

  1. Smiley- One of the strangest food experiences that Dan had while visiting South Africa was trying a smiley. A smiley is a sheep’s head that is charred on a braai or grill.  The head is grilled until its lips are burned off which leaves the sheep’s head with a big smile!
  2. Plátanos Maduros- While Christy was enjoying Costa Rica she also decided to try out this savory local dish also known as Costa Rican fried bananas.
  3. Rocky Mountain Oysters- Melissa did not have to venture far from home to find a memorable meal.  Rocky Mountain Oysters are a Montana delicacy.  While eating cow testicles may sound crazy to you, many people in the area go crazy for them!  There are even festivals dedicated to this wild local favorite.
  4. Tripe- While in Peru, Mindy decided she would enhance her experience in the country by trying one of the local dishes: Tripe.  For those of you who have not had the opportunity to sample tripe and may be wondering constitutes the meal, Tripe is animal intestines.
  5. Horse Meat- In the U.S. horse is somewhat of a taboo food because of the role that they play as pets, but in many countries, this same taboo does not exist.  While visiting Holland, Jon discovered that horsemeat is a tasty, slightly sweet meat that is enjoyed by millions in Europe.
  6. Pâté de Foie Gras- This delicacy enjoyed by Carol is a well-known and popular dish in France.  Foie Gras is specially fattened goose or duck liver made into a Pâté. (a spreadable paste)
  7. Alpaca Meat- Enjoyed by both the ancient Incans and Kasey, this dish is not one you can find just anywhere.  To sample this unusual meat Kasey traveled to Ecuador, one of the countries that Alpacas call home.  Alpaca meat is lean and high in protein.

As you can see, the Austin-Lehman office staff likes to indulge in the local cuisine wherever they are traveling.

Would you ever try any of these unusual meals?  What’s the most unusual dish that you’ve been brave enough to try? Leave a comment and tell us!
