Located in southwest Oregon, Crater Lake National Park is an extraordinary mixture of serene natural beauty, unspoiled alpine grandeur, and authentic National Park charm all with an intense volcanic history.  It is a place of deep fascination for visitors and scientists alike. 

Crater Lake is best known for its intense blue color and pristine water.  This stunning lake was formed when the volcano Mount Mazama collapsed after an enormous eruption.  This collapse formed a deep caldera, which over time has filled with rainwater and snowfall.  There are no rivers or streams that flow in or out of the lake, making its waters some of the purest in the world.  Because of its location just 100 miles from the Pacific coast and in the heart of the towering Cascade Range, Crater Lake receives a huge amount of snowfall.    This not only keeps the lake replenished but it has made Crater Lake the deepest lake in United States.

I'll just come out and say, traveling to Europe isn't cheap. When you factor in airfare, hotels, activities, food, guides and transportation... it adds up to be a lot. That is why we've designed a 5 day/4 night Holland bike tour that shows you the highlights of Holland but without the major costs of a luxury adventure vacation. Fear not, we don't spend all our time frolicking through the tulips on this tour. We also ride the fietspaden (bike paths) to explore the coastal region of the country and even ride through the dunes outside Zandvoort. Not to mention seeing the famous windmills and canals of this gorgeous country.

I think what makes Holland the perfect place for a European bike tour is how flat it is! You get to see so much more of the country when you don't have to worry about struggling up steeps hills and also the diversity of the landscape is quite stunning and unexpected. At least I was blown away by Holland!

Cowboy Corey and Hurricane Carrie checking in from the Black Hills of South Dakota where we are getting our adventures in order for the upcoming Black Hills family vacations!  We were welcomed to the rolling hills with the thunderous tune of motorcycles, where over half a million riders flock every year for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.  Carrie and I were so delighted by the scene that we took to the winding roads on a Harley, celebrating this extraordinary environment in true rally fashion.  We can’t wait to share our passion for this place with you all, from the bona fide western cities of Sturgis and Deadwood to the Presidential faces that Defined America carved into Mount Rushmore.

Above all, The George S. Mickelson Trail is the pinnacle experience of the Black Hills Trip; with 109 miles of trail meandering through prairies, past granite mountain views, heavily timbered forests, and ghostly deserted mining towns the experience is paramount.  The Burlington Northern Rail Line was abandoned in 1983 which passes through the heart of the Black Hills.  With the Support of Governor George S. Mickelson the rails were removed and a bike path was born in 1991.  The rails to trails project was completed in 1998, spanning 109 miles with more than 100 converted railroad bridges and four hard rock tunnels this trail is a must for anyone who enjoys adventure via pedal power.

If you are anything like me, the thought of checking luggage for a trip adds another layer of stress that seems unnecessary for a vacation!  Are they going to charge me? Are they going to lose my bag?  Who might be going through my things?  Will my bag end up with big black stains on them (which I still haven’t figured out how to remove)?  So, now I try to always travel with only carry-on luggage (I just purchased a Briggs and Riley Bag, and think it might be perfect)!  

This becomes a little more challenging in the shoulder seasons when you need to prepare for a multitude of weather conditions, but with these tips you will be packing lightly and efficiently for your next fall or spring get away.

1. Light Layers:  This is the key to packing light; be prepared to pack items that can be ‘stacked’ on.  By bringing a base layer (I like The North Face, mid weight base layers), and a medium weight sweater or fleece pull over, along with a good quality rain jacket (mine is a Marmot) you don’t have to worry about packing a parka for chilly days.  Don’t forget a nice pair of thin, but wind proof, gloves and a light hat and you will be set for anything!

2. A Pashmina:  These things are so versatile, and if you have read my blogs before you know they have a myriad of purposes.  They can be a scarf if you are cold, a head covering if you need to go into a Mosque, a blanket on a cold plane, a makeshift picnic blanket, a bathing suit cover up, and they can also be worn as a shall to dress up a dinner outfit.  With a neutral pashmina, you’ll look like a true Parisian as you stroll along the Seine.  This is a serious must for all lady travelers.

3. Socks:  Not just socks, but moisture wicking socks, like wool.  (My favorite is Smartwool).  This is an all year item, as wool will keep you warm in the cold and cool in the heat.  I recommend not only bringing short socks for hiking or biking, but also a few pairs of knee high socks to help keep your legs warm. This pairs with:

4. Undies:  A good pair of long underwear bottoms.  I know we talked about base layers for the top half, but having a good quality bottom base layer will keep you warm as you take in the sights of Prague, of any city, on a rainy day!  You don’t need to be relegated to museums or shops if the weather gets ugly.

5. Color:  Lastly, to keep packing to a minimum, try to color coordinate the items that you pack.  Choose one neutral color (black, grey, brown, or navy) and build your wardrobe around that.  Make sure that everything matches everything else, and that way you will end up having more options (and fewer shoes).

I hope this helps condense your travel items as you plan your next European Vacation or Yellowstone Tour.  By packing thoughtfully you will save space as well as time and money as you traverse through airports.

Travel the Romantic Roads of Germany

The Romantic Road of Germany was a route created in 1950, as a desperate attempt for Germany to rebuild their tourism. Original visitors were mainly families and friends of the American Soldiers who were based in Southern Germany.  This route, although a newer innovation, passes neatly through historical and medieval towns and points of interests, which has raised foreign interest and touristic appeal for over 62 years now.  The trail from Würzburg to Füssen is a must experience activity during your Europe Adventure Vacation.  What better way to explore this trek through time then upon two wheels, enjoying a relaxing ride through history as you breath in the fresh air and soak up the stories of time. 

Your Europe Bike Trip with Austin Lehman through the Romantic Road will begin in Nördlingen. This is the only remaining walled medieval town in Germany.  Less crowded then the other two major towns makes Nördlingen an appealing place to visit.  The interest around this city only begins with the fact that it is built in the crater of a meteorite with a tower created of the rock that originally formed the massive crater.  Here you can also explore crooked streets, a 14^th century wall, and retreat at the end of the day to your beautiful hotel with modern accommodations.  Linked to the historic wing of the monastery church, the NH Klösterle Nördlingen is located in the center of the old town on the Romantic Road and is the perfect location for a peaceful slumber.  

The next location on your adventure vacation itinerary will include a saunter through Dinkelsbühl, and a nice relaxing ride through pastures and fields of sunflowers to the town of Rothenburg.  Activities also include watching a falcon flight show at the Schillingsfürst Castle, and a nice lunch at the quaint café in front.  When you arrive in Rothenburg you will be in awe of the vibrant cliff-side gardens, amazing art, and fascinating museums.  Stroll through the city during your night tour to learn a bit more about the town, and retreat at the end of the evening to Hotel Markusturm.  A historical customs house back in 1264, Hotel Markusturm is an enchanting location in a medieval town. Eight centuries later, it has been transformed into a hotel for visitors from all over the world.

After leaving the large town of Rotherburg you will then visit another one of the largest towns at Bad Mergentheim.  With its’ days dated back to the Roman era, this spa resort town is a must see marvel when riding the Romantic Roads.  From stories of nights and rebellion to relaxing in 5-star resorts, you have never felt as good as you will in Bad Mergentheim. Next in the town of Wertheim you will pedal beneath a thick forest canopy along the meandering path of the Tauber River.  This medieval village captures the Viking spirit with its’ glassworks, Franconian wine, and history of castles and fortresses.

For me when I think of biking tours, I think of Tuscany bike tours. Maybe it's the scenic routes, the history, the architecture, cuisine, maybe it's even the wine... but regardless of why Tuscany comes to mind; it is a remarkable place to bike though. I got the opportunity to go on our Tuscany tour last year and I was a bit blown away. I had been to Italy before but had only gotten to go to Milan for a couple of days. No disrespect on Milan, but Tuscany was best explained by one of our guest on the trip "This is like a fairy tale... this is the Italy I've always dreamed off." That quote was while biking from Siena to San Gimignano on one of my favorite routes I've ever ridden.

The nostalgia of the Tuscany region is what really makes biking there special, what makes it a treat is after a long day of biking enjoying a glass of vino from a local vineyard that you rode by earlier that day.

I personally think that seeing a country by bike is the best way to see a country, you get an intimate experience with the routes, the towns, the people and it gives you the ability to see things at your pace. You just can't get that same experience by a bus tour or even renting a car and driving through a country.

Alright first let me explain what an E-Bike is for the folks that are wondering, an "E-Bike" is a hip way of saying electric bike.  Now for those wondering why I think E-Bikes are totally radical, first off they make riding a lot easier. I know what you're thinking "Isn't that cheating?" well it depends on who you ask. Last year I got to be a part of Austin-Lehman's first trip with E-Bikes and we tested them out on our Tuscany bike tour. Our guests demoing the bikes were all in their sixties and about average bikers. Cycling tours in Tuscany is probably the last place you'd think to see someone in their sixties, because there are some serious climbs in the region. Barcellona, Madrid, Seville, and Granada; all cities you thought you would miss on your upcoming adventure tour through Spain.  Just to name a few of the gorgeous and breathtaking cities that the historic Country of Spain has become famous for.  As you plan your dream adventure vacation of a lifetime to visit La Rioja and the Navarra provinces of Northern Spain, you have probably also wondered what it would be like to visit some areas not on the itinerary.  The splendor of an Austin-Lehman Adventure tour is that you will be sure to see the best that each location you visit, has to offer.  If the travel bug has bit you, and you are able to spend some time before and/or after your adventure tour, you should definitely check out some of the other local activities and antique cities that the striking country of Spain has to offer.

Your Spain Bike Tour will not fall short of your expectations as you meander through the city of historic Pamplona on a guided tour, where the running of the bulls is held.  You will also trek along the ancient pilgrimage route of Camino De Santiago, reveling in the beauty of the nearby villages.  You can also plan on a toast in Olite, wine capital of the Navarra province.  You will then bask in the views of the cliffs overlooking Rioja’s Cidacos valley, taking in views of almond groves and sheep laden meadows.  A full adventure complete with memorable biking adventures, the most palatable foods you can imagine, and the most delectable wines you have ever had the pleasure of sampling.  While Austin Lehman has taken the guesswork out of your next Spain vacation, you can still give the planning a go if you choose to check out some other parts of the country while you are visiting.  Book your flight for a week before or after your Austin-Lehman Adventure, so you have some time to plan some explorations of your own. 

If you happen to be planning your Spain vacation with Austin-Lehman, during the weeks between July 6^th -14^th you should definitely plan some time to visit the San Fermin Festival to see the famous running of the bulls. Enjoy wonderful music, delicious foods, exciting dance, and stunning fireworks. If you happen to miss the dates, your tour will still provide you with tons of stories and images so you will be able to practically hear the hoofs charging. You should also check out the Pamplona Cathedral, the brilliant stonework and gothic ancient interior is a site not to be missed.   If you loved the Cathedral you should also take some time to check out Monasterio de Leyre which oldest records of the site date back to 842.  The natural ambiance surrounding the Monasterio is also offers a gorgeous view as well. If you are not looking to visit churches you still have tons of museums, observatories, landmarks, and parks to visit and explore during your cycling tours. 

If you are able to escape for more then a week before you tour you should also check out a few other cities.  While visiting Madrid you can attend a soccer game at Santiago Bernabeu, or visit the famous impressive main plaza with delicious cafes and newsworthy bars.  If you missed the running of the bulls in Pamplona you can watch a bullfight at the Ventas bullring.  At night the town transforms into a party city with eclectic mixes of music, and the town just keeps dancing.  Lastly don’t forget to start and end your day with a chocolate dipped churro. 

Anyone looking to view some spectacular Spainish architecture on their adventure vaction will be sure to put Barcelona on the must see list.  The Hospital de Sant Pau and Gaudi’s famous unfinished basilica Segrada Familia with modernist design and a short walk down Avenida de Gaudi, are windows of beauty looking through to the past. If you are also into art you can visit the Salvador Dali museum, or visit the Picasso Museum.  If you just want to wander around you can stroll the streets of the Gothic Quarter or pass through Barcelona’s famous streets of Las Ramblas featuring street performers, endless shops, and vibrant atmosphere. 

No matter which cities you trek through before and/or after your cycling tour there are a few activities you need to have in mind, set to accomplish.  From enjoying tapas; specifically a delicious snack with your drinks out on the town, to catching a bull fight, soccer game, or visiting the splendid Alhambra Moorish Fortress located in the hills of Granada. Stop by the gardens of Seville to witness an authentic flamenco show fully packed with culture, folk music, and drunken gypsies.  No matter what you plan for your adventure travel it is always great to plan a couple of extra days to explore other gems that the county has to offer.  No tour can capture every bit of wonder that a location has to offer so take some time out to visit some other locations that you just can’t live without visiting.

On all the Austin-Lehman trips that I have led, I encounter a multitude of questions; from the size of the park, to what time are the animals released from their cage (however, this one is not often asked). But without fail one question that is always brought up is, "What can I do around Bozeman before or after my awesome vacation?" My recommendation would first include rephrasing the question to what can't I do around this town!?

    If you consider yourself a history buff, or are seeking the inner child in you head to the Museum of the Rockies. You are instantly surrounded by the dinosaurs that walked in the same streets as you are now! Also, there are a ton of other historical artifacts from the pioneer times as well! While moseying around town, simply walk down main street for a few hours. There are great stores for some last minute gear purchases or finally get that kayak to start your hobby (inspired from your Austin-Lehman adventure)! Also on Main you can grab some of the best food Montana has to offer including the famed, Ted's Montana Grill for a hearty cut of bison steak raised on one of Mr. Turner's farms! Also those looking to stay out a little later can indulge in the nightlife of Bozeman that more often than not will include live music and dancing!
     If you would like to push yourself a little bit more towards the outdoorsy lifestyle of the area your options only continue to grow! A short drive to Big Sky resort can have you flying downhill on a mountain bike or Zipping through the sky on their newly installed zip line systems. Also a quick call to the office or one of your guides can get a connection to a fly fishing guide that has newly been added to the Austin-Lehman family! All the local shops also rent everything from bikes to paddle boards! So turn an afternoon into an adventure taking some rented or purchased gear into Hyalite Canyon just outside of town. Paddle the reservoir or bike the seemingly endless trails! In short, Bozeman is an excellent town to start or finish off your Yellowstone National Park Vacation or Montana family adventure offering fun for all ages and interests! Greetings travelers I am Josh Fried and I live in Los Angeles, California. I love travelling and have been doing it ever since i was a little pipsqueak. I am now 15 years old and have been all around the country (not the world....yet). I thought traveling was just an activity where you visit a destination and meet people and experience attractions. For me that all changed last year! About a year ago I went on a trip with Austin-Lehman Adventures, we had discovered them several years before but had never had the time to go on one. My Dad and I ended up going on their Canadian Rockies family adventure. Saying we both had the time of our life is an understatement, we had the best time in the world! The area was beautiful, the locals were friendly and best of all we had three amazing guides that knew the area better then the back of their hand. Overall it was the best vacation I've ever had. A few months ago we were planning our summer and my parents asked me and my brother what we wanted to do. The first thing that came to my mind was “how about an Austin-Lehman trip”. My dad said “you should decide which one you want to do” so I was flipping through the catalog and I stumbled across their cycling tour of the Black Hills in South Dakota. It looked so much fun! Biking through the Black Hills, seeing Mount Rushmore, It sounded so much fun. I don't depart for another three weeks, yet I'm am jumping out of my skin in excitement. I love biking and have heard grand stories of the Mickelson Trail from friends, I am also a big history buff and can't wait to see landmarks like Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. I can't wait for my next adventure with Austin-Lehman.

As the Seat of Government for the Western Roman Empire, “holy city”, catholic stronghold, and university town, Trier has played many roles in its long history.  Dating back to 5000 BC, this small medieval village is located in the Mosel region of Germany, nestled in between the borders of Germany, France and Liechtenstein.  This area has suffered through wars and conquests, triumphed with modernization, survived bombings during its term as a Brown Shirt stronghold during both world wars, and has currently found its place as a central European university city.

This region is stacked to the brim with ruins from the Roman Empire, including cathedrals, roman baths, and the remnants of city walls, all of which are protected by UNESCO.  The best place for a new visitor to start is at the Porta Nigra, a gate into the city which dates back to about AD 180, and the Roman occupation of that area.  There are also impressive archaeological museums housing the most comprehensive exhibits about civilization, economy, religion, and art from the first 400 years of the Common Era in Germany.

Another point of interest is the Karl Marx House; the house contains a permanent exhibit “Karl Marx (1818-1883), Life – Work – Influence up to the Present”.   Here you will learn about the German philosopher/economist/ socialist, and his theories, beliefs, and influences as well as the effects he has had on our current global political/social movements.

For those who don’t have an itch for museums, Trier also boasts a wonderful main marker area, which acts as a gateway to the Cathedral and the Jewish Quarter.  This is also a great city to indulge in cycling tours before meeting the group!

 With so much history, Trier is the perfect place to explore before one of your German bike tours.

When most people think of "riding" in South Dakota an image of a Harley Davidson comes to mind. On  South Dakota cycling tours you'll explore the "Badlands" by pedaling on two wheels!

Rapid City is often called the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and the "City of Presidents". Your adventure begins and ends in Rapid City. Named after the creek that runs nearby Rapid Creek.

What can I do on my South Dakota vacation? Many ask. As an adventure vacation destination there are  many highlights; Mount Rushmore, Chief Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, Reptile Gardens, The Badlands, Wall Drug, Deadwood, The Passion Play and of course the Sturgis Bike Rally. The pine covered mountains and prarie lands are abundant in wildlfe and natural attractions. You can also try your hand at Texas Hold'em; Slots, Progressive Poker or Black Jack!

When it comes to cycling tours, what most dont know is that the Mickelson Trail is on the list of many cyclsts to do list. The trail offers a great way to get out and explore the countryside of South Dakota. Part of the Rails to Trails, the Mickelson Trail is an old railbed. constructed in 1890 it operated as a dedicated route until 1983. You can cycle the entire trail in one day or split it out into a few days. The trail was named after the state governonr George S Mickelson. Established in this cycling trail Adventure is a total of 110 miles.

And if you would like to try some good local cuisine a visit to Kevin Costner's restaurant or bar & grill. Located on the main street of Deadwood.

So you've never been to Zell am See, Austria? If you're anything like I was before my Austria Adventure, you wouldn't know what you were missing out on! 

Zell am See is the host city of ALA's Austria Family Adventure. Getting into this town a day or two early will not disappoint (and will allow you to adjust to the significant time zone difference!) A very safe, somewhat touristy town, Zell am See provides a wide array of shops, restaurants and activities that the whole family can enjoy. After losing my luggage on my airline, there were plenty of shops to accommodate my needs in getting temporary replacement items such as clothing, shower items, and a phone charger. I also had the best (and biggest) burger ever at one of the local joints in town - yum! Everywhere is easy to walk to and many of the locals speak English, so you can feel confident exploring a foreign city on your own!

My favorite feature in Zell am See is the Zeller See, the lake smack in the middle of town. Sail boats, swimmers, paddle boats, and swans grace the waters, and with a backdrop of carpets of colorful flowers, the local ski resort, miniature chateaus complete with hanging flower baskets, and the towering Alps with snow capped peaks, the scenery is jaw-dropping gorgeous! Trails surrounding the lake allow you to walk from one section of town to another, although you won't want to walk the full 8 miles around the lake since that's your first day's bike ride!

Today I wanted to talk about and share one of my favorite towns in the world, Jackson, Wyoming. With a population just under 10,000 and located just outside Grand Teton National it is prime time for adventurers. I was lucky enough to guide our Wyoming Family- Yellowstone/Teton adventure this past week, which starts and ends in the beautiful town of Jackson.

Some History on Jackson:
As part of the Hayden Expedition of 1871 and 1872, William Henry Jackson took the first photos of the Tetons and Yellowstone Park.  His photos, along with paintings by Tom Moran, convinced Congress to protect Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park became the first National Park in 1872.  Grand Teton National Park was created in 1920 and greatly expanded in 1950 by the generous efforts of John D. Rockefeller, who purchased and then donated over 30,000 acres. The Town of Jackson was named in 1894,  some of the early buildings remain and can be found throughout the area of the Town Square.  

What to do in Jackson:
1) Bike Antelope Flats, it is a great and easy ride! Enjoy the scenery with the Tetons in view the whole bike ride and make sure you stop by the T. A. Moulton Barn. Often referred to as the most photographed barn in America, I think the backdrop of the Tetons soaring up might have something to do with that.

2) Cable car ride, take the tram to the top of Jackson Hole Resort for some amazing views!

3) Look Up! If you head to Jackson and don't take the time to look at the stars over the Tetons, then you are missing out.

4) Yee Haw! Head on down to the Jackson Rodeo, experience a real wild west rodeo!

5) Jenny Lake, just outside Jackson sits this beautiful lake. The Jenny Lake Loop Road is about 5 miles long and can be easily accessed from the Teton Loop Road. There is also a 6.5 mile hike around the lake, which is a pretty flat and easy trail.

One more thing, I'm sure you'll be hungry after all these activities... I recommend the Trio for dinner, they are an American Bistro with delicious cuisine. Save some room for dessert, the s'more pie is amazing!
