What is my funniest memory I can think of from an Austin-Lehman adventure? Well, from growing up in the guiding business, a list of my funniest recollections literally has no end. But for some reason when thinking back in time, a certain adventure that took place in the beautiful Black Hills a few years ago comes to mind.

If you think that Mount Rushmore is all that the wide open state of South Dakota has to offer, then think again! ALA’s South Dakota cycling tour features the not-so-famous Mickelson Trail, a 110 mile Rails to Trails project that begins in Deadwood ( a mini western Las Vegas) and ends in Edgemont, a sleepy town with 750 residents. Between these two towns lies a Ponderosa pine paradise, Custer State Park.

Custer State Park is home to wildlife big and small from the burly, brawny bison to the peeking, passive prairie dog. Somewhere in between these two mammals is the infamous begging burro, a donkey that is not native to the Black Hills. These animals are descendants from the herd of burros that once hauled visitors to the top of Harney Peak. Once the rides discontinued, the burros were released into Custer State Park where they have become a popular visitor attraction.

Driving up in our Austin-Lehman van, I saw these begging burros from a mile away. As our group happened to reside in the only vehicle on the road at that time, we slowly crept up to the herd of burros “waiting” for our van. As if guarding the road, our van was immediately surrounded by burros demanding food from our snack basket. Turning around to joke with the guests behind me, I felt a nudge on my arm. One of the burros had stuck its head through the open window! Not able to stop laughing, we patiently waited as the burros decided that today was not their day for scoring snacks. About 15 minutes later, once a few other cars had pulled up and the burros grew bored with our van, they stampeeded away on to the vehicles behind us and we were free to drive up the road.

Austin-Lehman vacations are all about creating memories with friends new and old, family, and loved ones. A memory as simple as “the attack of the begging burros” brings me back to a time of laughter and friendship that I will hold onto for years to come.

During your next visit to The Netherlands, when you stroll through Holland, give your senses a treat at a few of the famous locations of the different cities.  See what makes these locations so beautiful, and better yet, even magical. 

5.  Stop by the famous city of Gouda.  Gouda didn’t become famous for its gorgeous canals, alleyways, midlevel mansions, or friendly locals, although all of these are great reasons to visit Gouda.  The real treat of Gouda is the amazing cheese of course, and it’s famous ‘stroopwafels’ (syrup waffles).  The mouthwatering flavor of the sweet waffles, in contrast to the rich variety of Gouda cheeses are sure to be a festival of flavors for your taste buds. 

4.   You should also pay tribute to the arts during your trip.  The Netherlands is home to many famous and well-stocked museums.  Soak up some of Rembrandt’s noted pieces like The Night Watch as well as some of Jan Vermeer’s miniatures, and other works by Fans Hals.  You will also love the Van Gogh Museum with a broad collection of his work featuring 200 paintings and 500 drawings.  Pass through the city of Leiden and take a trip through time to The Dutch National Museum of Antiquities.  The national center of archaeology offers the cultures of ancient Egypt, the Near East, the classical world, and the early Netherlands.   The list of museums goes on and on, no lack of beauty and art in Holland. 

3.   During the spring season in the flower fields of Keukenhof, you can breathe in the intoxicating aroma of tulips, hayacinths, and daffodils.  Inhale the fresh rows upon rows of flowers during a Dutch Bike Tour, and peddle past meadows filled with colorful and fragrant flowers.  Different events are also offered at the flower fields of Keukenhof, such as art days, the Dutch Folklore Festival (6 and 7^th of April 2013), Birds of prey show (31 March and the 1^st of April 2013), and many more. 

2.  Cycle through the windmills of Holland and enjoy the light breeze that blows through the different cities.  The famous windmills are always a great location for a photo opportunity.  Enjoy the views and the amazing landscapes of Holland including a stroll through the majestically illuminated canals of Leiden.  Take a Holland Bike Tour and pedal a watery wonderland of canals, lakes and windmills in Lisse.  You will quickly realize why the Dutch population enjoys travelling upon two wheels. 

1.  Enjoy a nice sea breeze and walk the pier, or along the soft sand beach in Scheveningen.  The very well maintained, white sand beaches of Scheveningen will offer great peace and quite to relax during your next vacation to The Netherlands.  Enjoy the warm embrace of some sunshine, and stop in to a café, or beachfront restaurant.  You can also rent a beach-chair, windshield, or parasol, to relax a bit more during your stay at the beach.

For me when I think of biking tours, I think of Tuscany bike tours. Maybe it's the scenic routes, the history, the architecture, cuisine, maybe it's even the wine... but regardless of why Tuscany comes to mind; it is a remarkable place to bike though. I got the opportunity to go on our Tuscany tour last year and I was a bit blown away. I had been to Italy before but had only gotten to go to Milan for a couple of days. No disrespect on Milan, but Tuscany was best explained by one of our guest on the trip "This is like a fairy tale... this is the Italy I've always dreamed off." That quote was while biking from Siena to San Gimignano on one of my favorite routes I've ever ridden.

The nostalgia of the Tuscany region is what really makes biking there special, what makes it a treat is after a long day of biking enjoying a glass of vino from a local vineyard that you rode by earlier that day.

I personally think that seeing a country by bike is the best way to see a country, you get an intimate experience with the routes, the towns, the people and it gives you the ability to see things at your pace. You just can't get that same experience by a bus tour or even renting a car and driving through a country.

Alright first let me explain what an E-Bike is for the folks that are wondering, an "E-Bike" is a hip way of saying electric bike.  Now for those wondering why I think E-Bikes are totally radical, first off they make riding a lot easier. I know what you're thinking "Isn't that cheating?" well it depends on who you ask. Last year I got to be a part of Austin-Lehman's first trip with E-Bikes and we tested them out on our Tuscany bike tour. Our guests demoing the bikes were all in their sixties and about average bikers. Cycling tours in Tuscany is probably the last place you'd think to see someone in their sixties, because there are some serious climbs in the region. Places to Visit in Spain While You Are On Your Spain Bike Tour

Barcellona, Madrid, Seville, and Granada; all cities you thought you would miss on your upcoming adventure tour through Spain.  Just to name a few of the gorgeous and breathtaking cities that the historic Country of Spain has become famous for.  As you plan your dream adventure vacation of a lifetime to visit La Rioja and the Navarra provinces of Northern Spain, you have probably also wondered what it would be like to visit some areas not on the itinerary.  The splendor of an Austin-Lehman Adventure tour is that you will be sure to see the best that each location you visit, has to offer.  If the travel bug has bit you, and you are able to spend some time before and/or after your adventure tour, you should definitely check out some of the other local activities and antique cities that the striking country of Spain has to offer.

You should also check out the Pamplona Cathedral, the brilliant stonework and gothic ancient interior is a site not to be missed.   If you loved the Cathedral you should also take some time to check out Monasterio de Leyre which oldest records of the site date back to 842.  The natural ambiance surrounding the Monasterio is also offers a gorgeous view as well. If you are not looking to visit churches you still have tons of museums, observatories, landmarks, and parks to visit and explore during your cycling tours. 

If you are able to escape for more then a week before you tour you should also check out a few other cities.  While visiting Madrid you can attend a soccer game at Santiago Bernabeu, or visit the famous impressive main plaza with delicious cafes and newsworthy bars.  If you missed the running of the bulls in Pamplona you can watch a bullfight at the Ventas bullring.  At night the town transforms into a party city with eclectic mixes of music, and the town just keeps dancing.  Lastly don’t forget to start and end your day with a chocolate dipped churro. 

Anyone looking to view some spectacular Spainish architecture on their adventure vaction will be sure to put Barcelona on the must see list.  The Hospital de Sant Pau and Gaudi’s famous unfinished basilica Segrada Familia with modernist design and a short walk down Avenida de Gaudi, are windows of beauty looking through to the past. If you are also into art you can visit the Salvador Dali museum, or visit the Picasso Museum.  If you just want to wander around you can stroll the streets of the Gothic Quarter or pass through Barcelona’s famous streets of Las Ramblas featuring street performers, endless shops, and vibrant atmosphere. 

No matter which cities you trek through before and/or after your cycling tour there are a few activities you need to have in mind, set to accomplish.  From enjoying tapas; specifically a delicious snack with your drinks out on the town, to catching a bull fight, soccer game, or visiting the splendid Alhambra Moorish Fortress located in the hills of Granada. Stop by the gardens of Seville to witness an authentic flamenco show fully packed with culture, folk music, and drunken gypsies.  No matter what you plan for your adventure travel it is always great to plan a couple of extra days to explore other gems that the county has to offer.  No tour can capture every bit of wonder that a location has to offer so take some time out to visit some other locations that you just can’t live without visiting.

Greetings travelers I am Josh Fried and I live in Los Angeles, California. I love travelling and have been doing it ever since i was a little pipsqueak. I am now 15 years old and have been all around the country (not the world....yet). I thought traveling was just an activity where you visit a destination and meet people and experience attractions. For me that all changed last year! About a year ago I went on a trip with Austin-Lehman Adventures, we had discovered them several years before but had never had the time to go on one. My Dad and I ended up going on their Canadian Rockies family adventure. Saying we both had the time of our life is an understatement, we had the best time in the world! The area was beautiful, the locals were friendly and best of all we had three amazing guides that knew the area better then the back of their hand. Overall it was the best vacation I've ever had. A few months ago we were planning our summer and my parents asked me and my brother what we wanted to do. The first thing that came to my mind was “how about an Austin-Lehman trip”. My dad said “you should decide which one you want to do” so I was flipping through the catalog and I stumbled across their cycling tour of the Black Hills in South Dakota. It looked so much fun! Biking through the Black Hills, seeing Mount Rushmore, It sounded so much fun. I don't depart for another three weeks, yet I'm am jumping out of my skin in excitement. I love biking and have heard grand stories of the Mickelson Trail from friends, I am also a big history buff and can't wait to see landmarks like Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. I can't wait for my next adventure with Austin-Lehman.

As the Seat of Government for the Western Roman Empire, “holy city”, catholic stronghold, and university town, Trier has played many roles in its long history.  Dating back to 5000 BC, this small medieval village is located in the Mosel region of Germany, nestled in between the borders of Germany, France and Liechtenstein.  This area has suffered through wars and conquests, triumphed with modernization, survived bombings during its term as a Brown Shirt stronghold during both world wars, and has currently found its place as a central European university city.

This region is stacked to the brim with ruins from the Roman Empire, including cathedrals, roman baths, and the remnants of city walls, all of which are protected by UNESCO.  The best place for a new visitor to start is at the Porta Nigra, a gate into the city which dates back to about AD 180, and the Roman occupation of that area.  There are also impressive archaeological museums housing the most comprehensive exhibits about civilization, economy, religion, and art from the first 400 years of the Common Era in Germany.

Another point of interest is the Karl Marx House; the house contains a permanent exhibit “Karl Marx (1818-1883), Life – Work – Influence up to the Present”.   Here you will learn about the German philosopher/economist/ socialist, and his theories, beliefs, and influences as well as the effects he has had on our current global political/social movements.

For those who don’t have an itch for museums, Trier also boasts a wonderful main marker area, which acts as a gateway to the Cathedral and the Jewish Quarter.  This is also a great city to indulge in cycling tours before meeting the group!

 With so much history, Trier is the perfect place to explore before one of your German bike tours.

When most people think of "riding" in South Dakota an image of a Harley Davidson comes to mind. On  South Dakota cycling tours you'll explore the "Badlands" by pedaling on two wheels!

Rapid City is often called the "Gateway to the Black Hills" and the "City of Presidents". Your adventure begins and ends in Rapid City. Named after the creek that runs nearby Rapid Creek.

What can I do on my South Dakota vacation? Many ask. As an adventure vacation destination there are  many highlights; Mount Rushmore, Chief Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, Reptile Gardens, The Badlands, Wall Drug, Deadwood, The Passion Play and of course the Sturgis Bike Rally. The pine covered mountains and prarie lands are abundant in wildlfe and natural attractions. You can also try your hand at Texas Hold'em; Slots, Progressive Poker or Black Jack!

When it comes to cycling tours, what most dont know is that the Mickelson Trail is on the list of many cyclsts to do list. The trail offers a great way to get out and explore the countryside of South Dakota. Part of the Rails to Trails, the Mickelson Trail is an old railbed. constructed in 1890 it operated as a dedicated route until 1983. You can cycle the entire trail in one day or split it out into a few days. The trail was named after the state governonr George S Mickelson. Established in this cycling trail Adventure is a total of 110 miles.

So you've never been to Zell am See, Austria? If you're anything like I was before my Austria Adventure, you wouldn't know what you were missing out on! 

Zell am See is the host city of ALA's Austria Family Adventure. Getting into this town a day or two early will not disappoint (and will allow you to adjust to the significant time zone difference!) A very safe, somewhat touristy town, Zell am See provides a wide array of shops, restaurants and activities that the whole family can enjoy. After losing my luggage on my airline, there were plenty of shops to accommodate my needs in getting temporary replacement items such as clothing, shower items, and a phone charger. I also had the best (and biggest) burger ever at one of the local joints in town - yum! Everywhere is easy to walk to and many of the locals speak English, so you can feel confident exploring a foreign city on your own!

My favorite feature in Zell am See is the Zeller See, the lake smack in the middle of town. Sail boats, swimmers, paddle boats, and swans grace the waters, and with a backdrop of carpets of colorful flowers, the local ski resort, miniature chateaus complete with hanging flower baskets, and the towering Alps with snow capped peaks, the scenery is jaw-dropping gorgeous! Trails surrounding the lake allow you to walk from one section of town to another, although you won't want to walk the full 8 miles around the lake since that's your first day's bike ride!

France is such a diverse country from the chic metropolitan city of Paris to the windswept dunes of the Normandy beaches to the lavender fields of Provence to the wineries of Burgundy to the picturesque castles of the Loire Valley.  France truly has something to offer everyone and it is the perfect country for your European cycling tours.  There is no better way to experience all that this beautiful country has to offer than on the two wheels of a bicycle.  Not only do you feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face but you can truly take in all the sights and smells on a whole different level. 

History Rich Brittany/Normandy

Not only are the Brittany and Normandy regions of France phenomenally beautiful but they offer adventurers a bit of a history lesson.  This area is rich in history dating back to the Roman Empire and also played an important role in World War II.  There will be plenty of time to visit the museums, beaches, battlefields and cemeteries.  Rolling through the historic villages you will be amazed by the half-timbered buildings that have endured the test of time.  Stop along the way and enjoy a savory crepe and a locally distilled cider!  There is no better way to journey to the majestic abbey of Mont St Michel than by bicycle.  You will see it far off in the distance and arrive to marvel at its splendor.  A cycling vacation in the Brittany/Normandy region will leave you craving your next trip to France. 

Luscious Provence

Famous for its fragrant lavender fields, jagged Mediterranean coast, charming villages and superb cuisine, Provence is everything you are dreaming of in a French vacation.  There is endless exploring to do in this region.  It has an incredibly rich history dating back to the Stone Age when some of the earliest people to inhabit Europe chose Provence.  How can you blame them?  The Mediterranean coastline is exquisite, beautiful mountains tower in the distance, several rivers meander the countryside and this region has a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters.  Famous for delicious cuisine, Provence has a flavor distinctly different from some of the other regions in France.  Expect to dine on some incredible seafood, crusty breads with fresh olive tapenade and array of fresh fruits.  Relaxation and enjoying life is hallmark of Provence, so make sure you indulge.  Spend some time people watching at an outdoor café in before taking a laidback stroll through the amazing markets of St Remy.  You will settle right into this leisurely lifestyle and feel relaxed and rejuvenated in no time!

Delectable Burgundy

The people who live in this region know the secrets of the “good life” start with amazing food and wine.  You will find no shortage of either on your cycling vacation to the Burgundy region of France.  It is a travelers dream!  The beautiful rolling hills of this region are dotted with picturesque small vineyards, magnificent chateaus and timeworn abbeys.    The quaint villages of Burgundy will invite you to linger and enjoy just one more glass of amazing pinot noir.  While vacationing in this area be sure to sample some of the famous regional cuisine like the Beef Bourguigon, Coq au Vin or the delicious Escagot in a white wine sauce.  This is an incredibly peaceful region of France that invites you to slow down, relax and stay awhile. 

The Enchanted Loire Valley

Spend just a few days cycling through the gorgeous Loire Valley and you will feel enlightened.  This region is famous for its extravagant chateaus and castles, gorgeous gardens and noble history.  Many of the impressive castles in the Loire Valley were once residences of the French Royalty.  They were built in this beautiful river valley because the close proximity to Paris, the pleasant climate, beautiful landscape and amazing growing season.  This region of the country is often called the Garden of France.  Not only will you find plenty of vineyards but you will also cycle past beautiful fruit orchards, fields of artichokes, asparagus and sunflowers.  Spend a few days pedaling through the charming villages, touring the picture perfect chateaus, sampling a few flakey pastries along the way and you will see why this region has been a haven for French royalty, poets, artists and travelers throughout history. 

With its impressive charm, food and wine, indulgent culture France will entice you time and time again.  It is the perfect place for your European cycling tours.

To help you get inspired to bike it up this summer, I thought I’d share with you some of my past biking adventures that you can experience yourself by jumping on one of our cycling tours in the Yellowstone-Tetons area! Here we go!

Antelope Flats

As the name implies, this bike ride is pretty darn flat which allows you to take in the scenery AND the wildlife as you coast around this back road in Grand Teton National Park.  I’ve seen everything on this ride: moose, bison, pronghorn, fox, coyote – I can almost guarantee that you will see something if you keep your eyes on your surroundings (and the road of course!!) You might even run into a bison jam on the road itself! Your ride ends at the famous and historic T.A. Moulton Barn, so if you’re a photographer, bring your camera!!

Grand Prismatic Trail

This flat gravel trail takes you the “back way” around the third largest hot spring in the world! Your guides will take you to the absolute best spot to view this colorful hot spring that will leave you awed and amazed. Plus, you get to ride through an area that was burned in the Yellowstone fires of 1988. Now this section of burned area is a beautiful bright green, filled with lodgepole pines as far as the eye can see, with the occasional ghost tree still standing and charred from those fires of nearly 25 years ago!

Wilson-Teton Village Bike Path

Beginning in the sleepy town of Wilson at the base of the Teton Pass, you’ll cycle from the local park, past the little red school house to a bike trail that passes horse pastures filled with daisies and lupine. From this path, you get a pretty neat view of the ski hill as you bike to the base of the world-renowned Jackson Hole ski resort. Keep an eye out as you cross over the creeks – you just might glimpse a moose’s antlers peeking out from the willows.

Teton Bike Path

The town of Jackson and the nearby valley (Jackson Hole) are an absolute outdoor Mecca. To keep up with the region’s image of being the ultimate outdoor playground, construction crews are working every summer on improving the valley’s bike paths and extending them from the town and beyond. Cycling on one of these paths directly beneath the towering Tetons is something you will never forget. The mountain range will seem to shift as you move along, sending illusions through your mind. That mountain you thought was the Grand Teton might actually be Teewinot or Mt. Owen! Your ride takes you to Jenny Lake, where the water is so clear you can see the trout swimming in the sparkling depths.

Today after being in the office all day I am really wishing I was on a cycling tour in the Southwest right about now. Specically on our Utah-Arches to Moab adventure, biking in Utah is such a neat experience. There is just something about the landscape and the bright red arches that blows your mind! It is a different world in itself, look at those characters in the photo below... thats what a great time looks like and Utah adventure vacations are the way to get that feeling where you just want to jump up and wave your hands in the air. It's hard to pick a favorite part of this trip, but for me it is biking in Canyonlands National Park and then hiking up to Mesa Arch (photo below) 

I just can't wait till I get back to Utah and get some biking done!!! Well that's it for me today, just wanted to share where I wish I was right now!

Today I was dreaming about Tuscany, not sure if it was because I was hungry or because I was dreaming about being out on the open road with my bike. None the less I wanted to share some memories I had from one of my cycling tours I have done in Italy, specifically my bike ride from Florence to Sienna...

First things first, I am positive that a biking is the best way to spend your European vacation. Biking just gives you the freedom to explore what you want, at the pace you want. You experience so much more by biking, then you would walking or taking a tour bus. We left Florence early in the morning and drove south an hour to Castellina in Chianti, where we started the day of cycling. The weather was perfect that day, sunny and warm. Right before we started our ride from Castellina, our wonderful guide George surprised us with a silver platter of dried fruit, a great boost of energy before a long ride. Then we set out on our biking tour to Siena, with four of our guest trying out the new E-bikes (electric bikes).

Right off the bat you see the beauty of the Tuscany region, vineyards and classic Italian homes spread out through the countryside as far as the eye can see. We had an early lunch in Radda and then set out to continue our real Italian cycling tour. Sometimes in order to get the best views of an area you have to work for it and Italy makes you work for some of those views with its hills, but with hard work comes reward and after each hill there was an incredible view and a nice long downhill to follow.

Once we biked into Siena you are greeted by medieval buildings and bright red brick buildings. The nostalgia that Siena packs is quite impressive and the city fits my perfect image Italy. 

Well that's it for now, got to get back to real life and stop dreaming...

Do you ever have one of those days when you look out the window, taking a break from your computer, only to let your mind wander off to some faraway place? Well, that just happened to me (shh, don’t tell the boss!), and I traveled back to the Mosel River Valley of Germany, one of the most beautiful destinations on the planet!

The main memory that floated into my mind when drifting back to my Mosel Valley trip were the long stretches of flat bike paths connecting quaint German towns interspersed along the calmly flowing Mosel River. (Did I mention that the wind was at my back the whole way too?!) I picture myself lazily pedaling along miles of paths amongst endless, terraced grape vine plots, stopping in each town along the way to snack on Pommes Frites (French fries) with mayo (a very popular appetizer in Germany) and taking a few photographs of the locals and unique architecture.

 But oh, there is so much more for the biker buff out there, who wants just a little more than the flat valley floor. Remember when I mentioned “terraced” hills? Your guides provide you with any number of extensions each day that include heart-pumping hill action, breathtaking vistas extending as far as the eye can see, and winding down hills taking you back to the main Mosel River paths. If you want variety in the slope of your bike path, Germany is the ultimate European Vacation!

To sum it all up, Germany to me is the absolute perfect biking destination for not only adults but families too! There is complete variety in the grade of the bike paths and road extensions so you can choose the difficulty of your vacation. Germany bike tours are an Austin-Lehman specialty and when you take me up on my suggestion of cycling around this beautiful European country, don’t forget to take in the beauty of the river valley, sip the variety of German wines, and eat a few Pommes Frites for me!

It’s the first day of Guide training for Austin Lehman Adventures and I’m home in my bed reviewing our day.  Ok, it’s not my bed, Toby and I have been staying upstairs at the ALA Farm/Office and now it feels like home.  That’s a good thing because we are about to embark on 4 months of travel and guiding in the West and won’t have a home.  But tonight, that’s just fine.  We are excited to go!  The time has come to get on the road, scout our destinations and show our guests what the vacation of a lifetime feels like.
