On March 1st, 1872, President US Grant signed the law creating Yellowstone National Park, the first national park in the world. Often called America's greatest invention, Yellowstone National Park paved the way for preserving our country's greatest treasures. Approximately 10,000 thermal features and more than 300 geysers are found in Yellowstone Park giving Yellowstone the highest concentration of gethermal features in the world. The photo above is of Grand Prismatic Geyser, the world's third largest hot spring and a true wonder of color and geology. Not many people know that soon after the Park was created in 1872, the US Army was brought in (and remained for over 30 years) to protect the Park’s resources and wildlife from exploitation, poaching, and development. The settlement created by the army was a tent camp for the first five years called Fort Sheridan, but then became a permanent settlement of sandstone buildings called Fort Yellowstone, which still remains in the area of Mammoth Hot Springs today!
