Because many people dream of trips to the emerald green waters of exotic beaches, the country of Holland might not necessarily be at the top of the list for summer vacation destinations. Certainly, the land isn’t known for its beaches and sunshine. But for those couples and families looking to journey on their first European vacation, the flat and lovely Dutch countryside promises to be a dream destination for cycling tours.
Biking through small fascinating villages while on cycling tour is the ultimate form of adventure and relaxation. While journeying throughout the country, the canals and windmills offer sights not well known anywhere else in the world. Amsterdam alone is home to over 100 kilometers of canals that wind their way through town and country.
For those who have adventured to the rolling hills of northern France or southern England, the famously flat landscape offers quite a contrast. Most of the land has been reclaimed by the sea with many small communities, well known for their windmills, doing all that is possible to shelter their towns behind dikes meant to protect from potential flood damage. Because the land is so flat, bicycles are a great way to travel while on holiday. In fact, the Dutch people and bicycles seem to go everywhere together, hand in hand. There are many cycling paths around the canals that also cross into open land and countryside.
The country is more than just landscape and picturesque sites however. The cosmopolitan feel of the culture can most be experienced in their foods, which have integrated with other cultures to provide new treats not often associated with Holland. Indonesian food along with other famous Dutch treats prevails in many locales. The land of tulips, windmills and canals is a perfect destination for adventure vacation packages so contact us today to learn more about our European travel itineraries.

Rural France has its fair share of pretty towns and dramatically breathtaking landscapes. Not only do stunning villages dot the countryside, but the area also features wonderful spots to sample wines and see the remains of Ancient Rome and the Ardèche and Auvergne gorges that define the region. For those interested in historical culture and stunning scenery along with some of the world’s best food and wine, this region puts the European vacation for singles, couples and families at the top of the list.
Burgundy is located in the Sens and Auxerre region, which lies southeast of Paris. The region is popular for adventure vacations because of the spectacular countryside as well as the many historical towns that all have their own stories to tell of wars, sieges and political intrigues down the ages. There are countless local markets to visit, and of course, probably one of the best known wines in the world to enjoy, Burgundy. Well known vintages include Chablis and Beaune with almost all vineyards and cellars a fascinating and delicious visit.
Historically, the town of Dijon became well known for being the center of the mustard trade, and visiting these types of towns will offer a valuable lesson in the geography, culture and history of the area. Enjoy the day walking the streets to make a perfect break in our cycling tours holiday itinerary. Historic buildings from the 11th and 13th centuries are also plenteous in the area including St. Etienne Church, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Stop by our online travel catalog to learn more about the wonders of vacationing in France.

When it comes to adventure vacations for couples, my wife and I will always choose Austin Lehman. We’ve been on 8 bike trips, and I have to say that our European vacation to La Loire in France was by far the best of them all. The timing of the trip and all activities was perfect, and the food, ah, it was superb! Without exception, our guide, Ron, was the most informed and nicest guide we’ve ever had in any of our groups, and having been on 8 guided cycling tours, that says a lot! Thanks for such a wonderful time, and we definitely plan on joining Austin Lehman again next year.

France is a wonderful place to plan your European vacation around, and there is nowhere more French than Loire Valley. With its wonderful scenery, great cuisine, some of the best wines in the world and of course, almost three chateaus for every day of the year you are bound to have the adventure vacation you are looking for.
On top of these essentially French ingredients, there are plenty of options for those looking for a more outdoors adventure vacation. The area is perfect for cycling tours as the River Loire creates a wonderfully gentle route for biking as it meanders its way through the valley. It also provides plenty of opportunities for swimming, catching the sun on lovely sandy riverside beaches and canoeing. Canoeing novices need never fear. It’s not exactly white water rafting. Remember that you’re in France in summer, and at this time of year everything is gentle, even the River Loire.
The gentle pace of the river also gives rise to another opportunity. Sandy islands form in the middle of the river and in some places during high summer it reaches temperatures of 120°F. This warm environment creates a brilliant display of tropical plants and rich bird life.
Adventure trips to Europe are not complete without a good portion of local history, and rest assured, the Loire region does not disappoint. Renaissance chateaus that were summer lodges for Kings and Queens such as Charles VII and Anne of Brittany make wonderful photo opportunities. Off for a European Adventure holiday? Well, shhhh, don’t tell the Swiss but the Belgians have it. It’s official. Belgian chocolate is the best in the world. It’s the gourmet standard by which all other chocolate confections are measured. What makes Belgian chocolate so dreamy? It is the quality ingredients and a strict adherence to tried and tested manufacturing techniques.
Most Belgian chocolate is handmade in small shops using old techniques and even older equipment. Cold shells are made and then filled with wonderful confections such as nougats, creams and pralines. Small chocolate outlets are very popular with visitors just as wineries are in France and breweries are in Germany. Perhaps joining one of our cycling tours is a great way of working off all the calories.
Can anything come anywhere close after such an introduction? Well, European vacations tend to come up with the odd surprise every now and then so how about a city, Brussels, which celebrates a statue of a small boy urinating in public? The Mannekin Pis (and the name is for real) commemorates a little boy extinguishing an explosive fuse as only little boys could and thereby saving the city from certain destruction. Mmm....on high days and holidays, the little 61 cm tall (how small?) is dressed to thrill. It’s a matter of national pride to come up with new costumes, a bit like Google and their logo artwork changes, I suppose. Expect two or three costume changes weekly.
To see the beautiful sights of Belgium, learn more about our travel itineraries by visiting us online today.

History has given an important role to this part of the world, and no European vacation would be complete without time spent in France: Brittany and Normandy. In Normandy, the Bayeux Tapestry details how the Normans defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 while the D-Day landing beaches make a poignant destination for any traveler. See how the landings took place, and then mark the visit by touring the Normandy American Cemetery to understand the true magnitude of these events.
As your adventure vacation for couples takes you through the rolling green hills of Normandy, you come to the rugged Brittany countryside. Once again history leaves its mark, this time in the form of standing stones from the Neolithic era, which can be seen around Carnac. Legend also links the young King Arthur to the forests around Paimpont where he is said to have received Excalibur, his famous sword. The Breton coastline is very long and consists of stark rocky outcrops interspersed with delightfully peaceful sandy coves where it would seem you are the only person alive.
Located just one and a half kilometer from the coast and connected by a causeway, Mont St Michel looks like a fairytale come true. Perched on a rocky island in the middle of vast sandbanks is a large Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael. Between the 11th and 16th centuries, a village grew up in the shadow of the walls and presents some great photo opportunities.
Of course, it wouldn’t be France without good food and drink. Watch out for luscious crepes found throughout France. They have their regional roots in this part of the world, and of course, with such an immense coastline, seafood is always top of the menu – in particular sweet Atlantic oysters, freshly shucked and dressed with garlic vinaigrette! Mon Dieu! There are no wines made this far north. The climate is too bracing, but never fear, there is sterling local brew called Calvados, a brandy made from distilled cider. With all this food and drink, it’s good to experience all of this as part of a cycling tour – so you can work off the extra pounds.

The Loire Valley has been hosting tourists since the 15th century when wealthy aristocrats built pretty castles as summer hunting lodges. Today there are upwards of 1,000 chateaus in the Loire Valley, each with its own tale to tell, and they make an important part of any adventure trip to this part of France especially as seen from the saddle of a passing bicycle. Time taken out for the best three: Chateau Chambord, Chateau Villandry and Chateau Chenonceau, which is even built in the Loire River itself, needs to be at the top of the list.
The countryside is an endless blend of green woodlands, stunning castles, and of course the River Loire itself. Lush, verdant woodlands make the sun dapple endlessly as the day progresses. The river and the countryside seem to constantly change. Deep channels with the road clinging precariously to the cliff change into wider vistas across valleys with one constant, La Loire herself. The gently flowing river brings this Constance to warm summer days here. Cycling tours through the Loire Valley are quite simply the best way of seeing the beauty on show.
This part of France is firmly steeped in the culture of wine making. Vineyards are all around and some of the world’s best wines such as Sancerre, Muscadet and Vouvray are made in this region and trips to vineyards and wineries are a good way to learn all about them. Perhaps a real joy is to seek out a less well known vineyard and get to know its product. Coming back from a European vacation, anyone can talk knowledgeably about the world’s great wines but knowing the less great wines. Well, that’s something to share.
