A European vacation is all about the experience….and telling friends and family when you get home of course. Place names that are impossible to read and pronounce are part of the enjoyment of foreign destinations. No matter how difficult the place names get in the country of Slovenia, it’s a wonderful place for a vacation.
Simply pronounced, Ljubljana (this is at the easy end of the pronunciation scale) is capital city of the country. Having escaped many of the ravages of the last war, it retains much of its medieval charm. To get the best flavor of the city, a walk up to Bled Castle sorts the men out from the boys. Steep narrow streets give way to some fantastic views over the old part of the city and Lake Bled.
Just the mountain scenery alone makes for one of the best European vacations while history seems to be built into every aspect of the landscape. Nowhere more is this so than the 1000 year old Škofja Loka. The city is built at the confluence of the Poljanska Sora and Selška Sora Rivers. Looking not unlike the town square in the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the city is recognized as the most unspoiled medieval city in Slovenia. Visit the two town squares, Mestni Trg and Spodnji Trg, both of which are in sight of the city’s fairy tale castle.
Slovenia is the least well known country to emerge from the breakup of Yugoslavia. It’s a country of fjord-like lakes, thundering waterfalls, luscious wine country all against a backdrop of spectacular mountains. It makes a perfect location for our cycling tours especially as it’s still relatively unknown – for now.
