Mexico Vacations - Chiapas Adventure
Bienvenidos! On this Mexico vacation you'll tour the ruins of Palenque, nestled deep in the jungle at the foot of the Sierra Madre del Sur. Palenque was an important power center during the height of Mayan civilization and dates back to 100 B.C. Enjoy a private tour of the archeological site, including the Templo de las Inscripciones, one of the most renowned burial monuments in the Americas. Tour the fascinating Palenque museum before your venture onto the Chan Kah Resort Village for some downtime before heading out for a night of traditional cuisine and live music. A professional archeologist accompanies you to Bonampak, home of the Templo de las Pinturas and its astonishing frescoes. Explore Frontera Corozal’s archeological sites, shrouded in jungle, and continue by boat to to the ruins of Yaxchitlán by way of the Usumacinta River, the natural border between Mexico and Guatemala. Explore Yaxchitlán’s ornamented building facades, roof combs and stone lintels depicting battles and ceremonial events, listening for the calls of howler monkeys in the Lacandón forest above. Hike up-river in search of private swimming holes at aqua-marine Agua Azul falls. Venture into the highlands to the charming colonial town of San Cristobal. Board a speedy launch for a trip through the majestic rock walls of the Sumidero Canyon, towering thousands of feet above while you keep an eye out for crocodiles, spider monkeys, cormorants and heron. Explore San Juan Chamula's main church, indigenous cemetery and town center. Hike beautiful whispering pine forests to a sweeping overlook of your next stop: San Lorenzo Zinacantan. Descend to the village to learn about the history and rituals of the highland Maya. Visit with traditional back-strap weavers and sample hand-made tortillas and a local home brew. Visit the world-famous Ahuehuete Cypress, the “El Tule Tree,” in Santa Maria del Tule. Over 2,000 years old, boasting a 33-foot wide trunk, El Tule, is one of the oldest and biggest trees in the world. Embark on a scenic 18-mile country bike ride to Tlacolula, sharing secondary dirt roads with cattle, goats and local farmers. Stop along the way to see the region’s oldest church. Visit a weaving museum in Teotitlán and bike to Tlacalula. Enjoy a guided Mexico tour of the extensive ruins of Monte Alban, the ancient capital of the Zapotecs, dating back to 500 BC. Take a walking tour of Oaxaca City, designated a UNESCO Human Heritage Site and visit the chocolate district, the zocalo, the cathedral, the Venti de Noviembre and Benito Juarez markets and the Santo Domingo church. Embark on a full day of Mexico adventure as you hike the Mixteca and the Apoala Canyon, explore the quaint pueblo village of Tierra Colorada, where you’ll meet your local Mixteca guide and his family. Hike to the great falls of Cascada Cola de la Serpiente and cool off with a swim in the fresh-water pools. Dinner at Casa Cantera followed by festive Guelaguetza, native dances in traditional dress. Visit to Dona Rosa’s pottery gallery for a demonstration on how alfarerias (black pottery) is made, shuttle to San Martin Tilcajete where Jacobo Mendoza and his family treat us to a a private woodcarving and dye making demonstration, and take a hands-on cooking class at Oaxaca’s Instituto de Cultura y Cocinar. Enjoy a 2-mile loop hike exploring Hierve El Agua, a series of calcified stone waterfalls overlooking agave plantations and the Valle de Central before exploring the ancient Zapotec site of Mitla, home to the Great House of Pezelao, considered by many the most beautiful archaeological site in the Americas. Hike the Sierra Norte’s isolated highlands between the Cauljimoloyas pueblo and the pueblo of Benito Juarez and learn about the local fauna and medicinal and edible plants from your Zapotecan guide.
