Your Guides: Impassioned Leaders, Friends and Expert Naturalists |
The folks who greet you with a smile and a briefing each morning before
seeing you on your way, who point you down an unmarked trail to a
hidden hot spring, who circle back on a 40-mile bike ride to pedal the
last uphill stretch by your
side. The folks with the inside track on where to find the sweetest mole sauce in Mexico, the spiciest bratwurst in Bavaria, the best roadside crpe
on the coast of Normandy. The folks who surprise you with eggs cooked
just your way at breakfast, a champagne toast at sunset and an
encyclopedic knowledge of the local wildlife, geography, history,
language and culture.
As passionate about getting to know you as they are about the world
around them, your guides - the folks with you throughout your journey
are often what truly make your travel experience. We've devoted this
Travelogue to them, the
lifeblood of adventure outfitters like ours. To all the impassioned guides out there, we say thank you for your contagious enthusiasm, your expertise and your friendship. You are truly the heart and soul of our business!

Peace of Mind and Other Perks to Traveling with Great Guides |
by Jonathan Lehman
With developments like Google, 24-hour high-definition travel
television, online forums and more guidebooks and travel memoirs than
you can shake a stick at, it seems like informed, independent travel is
easier than ever. But no matter how
much research, planning and consultation go into a trip, travelers who
choose to fly solo are still missing two key elements essential for a
truly world-class vacation: the knowledge that comes with experience, and peace of mind.
This is where a great guide comes in. And I'm not talking about the
umbrella-toting type, whose responsibility is to lead a herd of
tourists through a crowded city citing points of interest. I'm talking
about the guide who takes care of
every single detail throughout the day, so you don't have to. The guide who prides herself on taking you off the beaten tourist track. The guide who challenges you to hike the extra mile for a jaw dropping view, and
who's there with a cold drink and a lift when you're ready to call it a day.

ALA Guide Lincoln Baker, on Kayaking Alaska |
We
asked one of our guides, Lincoln, to share a favorite memory from a
past Austin-Lehman adventure. We love his response. Not simply because
of the spectacular scene it describes, but because of the excitement
with which he recounts it.
It's this excitement that first inspired Lincoln to try his hand at
leading adventure tours, and it is what's kept him in the field for
nearly a decade.
"The water at Point Adolphus was serene. There wasn't a whisper of
wind, and the mountains reflected perfectly on the surface of the sea.
We paddled by kayak along the Point's northern shore, and on this day
we were blessed: there were
humpbacks everywhere! They followed our kayaks into the shallow shores,
swimming and playing all around us. We paused for a beachside lunch and
watched in awe as a mother and calf danced just off shore. Back in our
kayaks, we spotted bald
eagles, river otters and, out of nowhere, a pod of Orcas. Later on the
shuttle boat across the bay, we raised a glass of wine...I'll never
forget the grins plastered across everyone's faces...what a day!"
