Multisport Defined
What
is a “Multisport Adventure?” Let’s start with the term “adventure.” We
us it loosely here at Austin-Lehman. To us, an adventure isn’t
necessarily something that sends adrenaline coursing through your veins
(although there’s no shortage of that sort of thing on any of our
trips). We believe you’re just as likely to find adventure visiting the
ancient Anasazi ruins in the American Southwest, watching a local
artisan practice an age-old craft in a village in Oaxaca, or sipping a
glass of local wine in a chateau in France’s Loire Valley. For us,
adventure is anything that gets you going, gives you a taste of local
flavor and makes you look at the world a little differently.
“Multisport” is where the action is: hiking, biking, rafting, horseback
riding, climbing, kayaking – activities that take you off the beaten
path and let you experience a destination in the most exciting and
impressive way possible. It’s picking your way by ice axe to the top of
Athabasca Glacier in the Canadian Rockies…riding horseback high into
Montana’s Absaroka Mountains…paddling Costa Rica’s Pacuare River and
breezing along Brittany’s beautiful coastline by bike. The beauty of a
“multisport” adventure isn’t just in the action, however – it’s the
fact that whatever your interests or abilities, you’re bound to find an
activity (or three) that satisfies your craving for fun.

Charlie and Ken on Multisport Adventure
After
leading the pack in multisport travel for over 20 years, Austin-Lehman
prides itself on helping Alumni discover their own sense of adventure.
In search of a different way to see the world, Charlie Wiggins of
Campbell Hall, New York made his first foray into adventure travel on
Austin-Lehman’s Glacier and Waterton Lakes trip several years back.
Charlie tells ALA, “…that
trip was the best trip my wife and I had ever taken. It lifted our
spirits, woke up our senses, and gave us a whole new sense of adventure
we never knew was inside us.” ALA’s multi-sport approach made sense to Charlie, too. “We loved breaking up the activities, like biking in the morning and hiking or rafting in the afternoon.”
Since his first multi-sport experience on a visit to Glacier National
Park, Ken Lyons of Ringwood, New Jersey has been on several trips with
Austin-Lehman. Ken remembers the day his first ALA catalog arrived in
the mail: “…when
I got it, my heart started pounding. There were pictures of
destinations I remembered seeing through a View-Master as a child.
Scanning the catalog, I knew right away that this kind of vacation was
something I would love to try. I’d done my share of hiking and biking,
had done some horseback riding and white water rafting. To do all of
these activities in one week in some far away destination was something
I had only dreamed about doing!”

Multisport Adventure: a New Way to See the World
Neither
Charlie nor Ken knew what they were getting into when they first signed
up for a trip with Austin-Lehman Adventures, but for these two intrepid
travelers – as well as hundreds of other ALA Alumni – multi-sport
travel has become not only a great way to vacation, but also a new way
to see the world.
