Blair's Guide Survey:
What’s your favorite vacation destination?
My heart is at home in Yellowstone National Park. I love the variety of opportunities it offers from the historical side, to wildlife - from the mountains to the valleys... its got everything I need to be at peace... I love that precious corner of the world.
What’s your favorite hike?
My favorite hike in the world is in Alaska. It's the Winner Creek Trail between Crow Creek Mine and the Alyeska. It journeys through the northernmost temperate rainforest and is incredible. You can watch the canopies drastically change throughout the trail. We look for the animal tracks in the mud beside the boardwalk while keeping an eye out for which one of them may be nearby. There is one point on the trail where you can escape all outside sounds and just listen to the rain and dew drops on the leaves below. It is a part of this world I am so proud of appreciating and protecting.
What’s your favorite bike ride?
In Alaska - of course! - I enjoy the ride out of Girdwood along the Turnagain Arm. It's the perfect way to take in Alaska one more time before heading back to Anchorage on the last day of the trip. Sun or rain - the dramatic terrain talks to you...
What’s your favorite trip to guide?
That's a tough question...I love guiding Alaska because we go places you wouldn't think to go on your own, but Yellowstone and the Tetons are pretty awesome too!!
Why?
In Alaska sun makes colors jump off their palate at you. In the rain, the terrain glistens and the animals come out to play. But no matter the place, with ALA, we travel to the nooks and crannies that not many people get to experience... I love sharing it!
What do you do that makes a guest’s vacation special?
My favorite part about guiding are the people I get to travel with. I love taking the time to get to know our guests and finding what I can do to make this vacation be all it can be and more.
Favorite Movie: That's a tough one for me because I love Forrest Gump, it's just a brilliant movie, but I can put on Hitch anytime and still be amused. Tom Hanks and Will Smith...perhaps the best movie would be one with the two of them!!!
Favorite Book: My Journal
Favorite Song: That depends on the mood I'm in. In the rain, it's "Like the Rain" by Clint Black. On a sunny day, it's "Blinded by the light" though I only know one line...but in the end "The littlest birds" by the Be Good Tanyas takes the prize every time.
Describe the most amazing experience you’ve had while guiding a trip:
I've been lucky to have so many amazing experiences. Just being able to be there and give others these opportunities they'd never had before is so precious to me. In Alaska there are amazing experiences everyday. One afternoon I had the pleasure to bike ride with one of our youngest clients all summer on the weeks longest ride. He was determined to do it and when he topped out on that last hill and saw his dad waiting for him at the bottom he was so proud. I looked over at his mom and the silence between us spoke a thousand words.
Watching the Orcas come into the Alaskan waters over the course of the summer, listening to the glaciers rumble at your fingertips, taking in the flowers as they grow, bloom, and tower at the trailside and showing off Alaska's incredible features is an experience I only wish I could describe...
When did you first catch the travel bug?
I think I've always had it. Growing up, my dad was a pilot and we traveled a fair amount. In college I went on a trip to Peru to hike the Inca Trail and experience the South American way - I don't think I've stopped moving since! It's in my blood, my spirit, and my dreams.
What are your hobbies?
Travelling, writing, hiking, sea kayaking... life!
