Yellowstone Guide Kristi Scott
Back to Guide Pages >>Guide: Kristi Scott
Short Bio: Kristi was born in Missoula, Montana. Much of her childhood was spent playing in the rivers, lakes and mountains of Montana. After graduating from high school in Great Falls, Kristi started her college education in art at the University of Montana. A few years later, Kristi moved to the ski community of Big Sky where she transitioned from a university student to a student of life and became a proficient ‘ski bum.’ She spent countless wonderful days on the slopes enjoying life to its fullest. During the summer months, Kristi began working for Adventures Plus which partnered with Back Country Adventures to become Austin-Lehman Adventures. She has led trips in Montana, Grand Teton, Glacier, and Yellowstone National Parks, the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska, and Bryce, Zion and Escalante Parks in the South West. Kristi went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Native American Studies in the spring of 2006 from
Montana State University in Bozeman. Since that time she has been working at the C. M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, MT as the Assistant Curator of the upcoming permanent exhibition, The Bison: Heart of Plains Indian Culture, American Icon. Kristi finds culture fascinating and enjoys working with and learning about people. She is passionate about museum work and responsibly educating the general public. She has worked with the Office of Public Instruction in Helena and the Indian Education For All Act to facilitate curriculum changes state wide that integrate American Indian education into public schools for grades K-12. Kristi continues to adventure into the wilderness, enjoying active vacations spent skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, biking and canoeing. She plans to pursue a graduate degree in Anthropology or Museum Studies in the near future.

Kristi's Guide Survey:
What’s your favorite vacation destination?
Costa Rica, Alaska or anywhere outdoors!
What’s your favorite hike?
Hiking up to the Nanatuks (mountains and valleys buried with snow so that just the peaks are sticking out of the glacial mass) at Exit Glacier on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.
What’s your favorite bike ride?
The Antelope Flats ride on the Grand Teton trip. I love it because of the fabulous views of the Tetons AND the great opportunity to see abundant wildlife.
What’s your favorite trip to guide?
Well, I have truly loved every single trip that I have guided, but my favorite is still the Montana trip because I am so familiar/knowledgeable with it AND proud of my home state and the incredible beauty and adventure it offers!
What do you do that makes a guest’s vacation special?
I connect with each guest on a one on one level and find out what their strengths and weaknesses, desires and concerns are. Then, I can figure out how to best accommodate their goals and aspirations for the trip to make it the best ever! Everyone seems to come to the trip with a dream or a passion; and it is my job to help them fulfill that! I love my job!
Favorite Movie: Goonies - child of the 80's!
Favorite Book: Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins
Favorite Song: Landslide by Fleetwood Mac
Describe the most amazing experience you’ve had while guiding a trip:
In Alaska while on the all day private boat cruise, we found ourselves in the middle of a 'Mega-Pod' (large group of animals that are coming together during mating season) of Orcas. They were communicating with each other (we lowered a microphone into the water to hear their sounds) and showing off for one and other - jumping into the air, raising fins, slapping the water surface, etc. It was awesome! Everyone on the boat had tears in their eyes (or were full on crying) at the amazing spectacle of nature that we were witnessing! It was incredible and unforgettable!!!!
When did you first catch the travel bug?
Oh, well for the great outdoors, I was about age 3. We were camping in the mountains of western Montana and I remember looking up at the big dark sky full of tiny bright stars while the fire flickered - I was hooked from there forward on outdoor vacations, preferably in the mountains! As for the rest of the world, it was in my early college years after a adventure to Europe!
What are your hobbies?
I love to be outside biking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, rafting, horseback riding and observing the environment around me! I am an avid plant lover and enjoy identifying wildflowers and their medicinal purposes (or lack there of). I am fascinated by history and culture and enjoy researching and learning about the world around me.
