Corcovado National Park: the Crown Jewel of Costa Rica
National Geographic calls Corcovado National Park "the most biologically intense place on Earth." And for good reason. Corcovado protects the largest primary tropical rainforest on the American Pacific coastline and is one of the few remaining sizeable areas of lowland tropical rainforests in the world. The park is home to some 500 species of trees, 140 species of mammals, 367 birds, 117 amphibians and reptiles, 40 types of freshwater fish and an estimated 6,000 unique insects!
Come face to face with howler, white-lipped peccary, squirrel and spider monkeys. Listen for the gentle cry of the fiery-billed aracari as she calls to her mate. Count the scarlet macaws feeding in a nearby almond tree. Hike along deserted beaches and lush trails to a canopy-viewing platform high on a jungle ridge. Learn how early indigenous hunters used the toxins from the tiny poison-dart frog. Raft the wild and scenic class IV Pacuare and pitch a deluxe camp on a secluded beach.
Let Austin-Lehman Adventures take you deep into the heart of Corcovado National Park, a land of lush, primordial beauty. Relax your mind, energize your body and ignite the adventurer within as we explore the crown jewel of Costa Rica.
Did You Know…
- The Corcovado National Park's 500 species of trees is equivalent to a quarter of all of the tree species in Costa Rica. Some of the larger trees include purple heart, poponjoche, nargusta, banak, cow tree, espave and crabwood.
- Corcovado is sanctuary to the largest population of scarlet macaws in the country. Other species of birds found in the park are the king culture, white hawk, short-billed pigeon, tovi parakeet and bronze-tailed sicklebill.
- Corcovado National Park's 41,788 hectares protect eight habitats, including montane, cloud, swamp and holillo forests, the Corcovado and Sirena rivers and mangrove and freshwater herbaceous swamps.
- Corcovado is a good place to spot the red-eyed tree frog (listen for his single-note mating "cluck"), the glass frog (with transparent skin) and the vibrant poison-arrow frog.
- Four species of sea turtles: green, Pacific ridley, hawksbill and leatherback, nest on Corcovado's beaches.
