Jan 18 2008
This spring as the desert blooms, take one expert’s advice and think bargains when it comes to domestic adventure travel.Matty Kirkland, our Southwest U.S. travel expert says there are reasons aplenty to consider Utah and Arizona this spring for cultural immersions that defy the Euro. Trip rates reflect pre-inflation, pre-energy-driven pricing.
“To help take the sting out of a softening dollar, we rolled back the price of our Bryce & Zion trip to 2003 levels – a $200 savings over last year!” Kirkland goes on to explain, “Guests are begging for bargains and one need look no further than our Havasupai base camp adventure in the Grand Canyon - where the price has been frozen for three years at $1,550 per person.”
In his opinion, “the West’s best kept secret,” is a journey on foot or horseback to a deluxe base camp deep in the Grand Canyon from which you can explore a remote Native American village (where the U.S. mail still arrives by packhorse) and venture out on hikes to thundering waterfalls in a surreal desert oasis setting. Our 5-day / 4-night Havasupai trip departs March 24 and April 2. Special children’s rates are also available. The host city is Scottsdale / Phoenix.
When asked, Kirkland does not hesitate to share his own favorite trip – Utah’s Bryce & Zion, Red Rock Wonders. Three departures, May 4, May 11 and May 18, showcase Utah’s “Grand Circle,” a concentration of postcard-worthy national parks. Guests enjoy active days of biking and hiking and the nighttime star gazing is among the best in the world. A series of cozy lodgings include Stone Canyon Inn, one of the “10 best properties in the United States for getting lost in the outdoors,” according to Conde Nast Traveler. The 6-day / 5-night exploration runs just $1,898 per person ($525 single supplement). The host city is St. George, Utah.
An adventure dubbed High Desert Country explores by foot, bike and aircraft the Grand Canyon and Sedona, with a shopping stop for art and handcrafted gifts in Tlaquepaque. Kirkland advises not to miss a visit to the spiritual energy vortexes near Sedona. Guests unpack only once, enjoying the luxury of Amara Resort & Spa. The 6-day / 5-night trip departs March 30 and April 27. The rate is $2,598 per person based on double occupancy ($680 single supplement). The host city is Scottsdale.
Kirkland also offers these expert insider tips when traveling the Southwest:
- The Peek-a-Boo loop trail in Bryce is one of the very best hikes in the U.S.
- Slide Rock in Oak Creek Canyon is a must-do for kids of all ages
- You haven’t lived until you’ve sipped a prickly pear margarita
- For a good pre-trip read, pick up Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey
- Wait until the fall to hike Zion’s Virgin Narrows or other slot canyons
Kirkland points out that, while pre-set departures usually average less than 12 guests, “for planning a trip where you have complete control over activities, style and budget, Austin-Lehman Adventures is the “go-to” company for setting up a private, custom, adventure vacation anywhere in the Americas.”
