France: Bordeaux to Dordogne

A storybook setting of striking natural beauty
Savory French country cuisine, charming market towns, prehistoric cave paintings and peaceful, rolling terrain set the perfect stage for your Bordeaux to Dordogne biking adventure.
Pedal past medieval turrets and pepper-pot towers mirrored in the glassy waters of the Dordogne River in Argentat. Marvel at the pilgrimage town of Rocamadour, where medieval homes and churches defy gravity as they cling to rocks 500 feet above the Alzou Valley. Wander the ancient streets and alleys of Sarlat and paddle a stretch of the Dordogne by kayak. Step back in time as you explore the Grotte Font de Gaume, an ancient cave whose limestone walls are decorated in colorful, 15,000-year-old paintings of bison, mammoths and reindeer – animals that roamed the banks of the Dordogne during the last Ice Age.
By night, reward yourself with an appetizer of foie gras or confit de canard and a glass of perfectly aged Bordeaux in the region for which it was named.

A few more reasons why you've gotta go…
- The red wine: Bordeaux is the red wine capital of the world. It’s truly a wine lover's Mecca, boasting over fifty appellations and nearly 10,000 chateaux. Each year, the region produces 800 million bottles of the finest wine in the world.
- The cathedrals: In Bordeaux, there are three stunning cathedrals which have been named UNESCO World Heritage sites—the Saint Andre Cathedral, once the site of Eleanor of Aquitaine’s wedding to England’s Henry II; the Saint Michel Cathedral with its extraordinary steeple called La Fleche or the arrow, which stands 114 meters high; and the Saint-Seurin Basilica, where you can see the tomb of Saint Forte.
- The caves: Due to the number of rivers and the local geology, the Dordogne has some magnificent cave complexes. Most offer traditional stalagmite/stalactite formations and some are famous for their ancient cave paintings.
- The truffles: Also known as “black diamonds,” this delicacy is widely used in the traditional cuisine of the Dordogne region which is renowned throughout France and features a number of specialties, including the Périgord truffle.
