From the Field: Provence Adventure Vacation

"Lying on the roof of the castle in Tarascon with some of our guests, shaded from the Mistral wind, basking in the Provence October sun…it was a moment so relaxing, so sensuous – it was perfect!"

France - Taste of Provence Biking Adventure

Bountiful farms, bustling markets and full-bodies wines

From Avignon to Uzès, the magnificent region of Provence offers an ideal mix of arid climate, picturesque hill towns, Roman ruins and landscapes blanketed in lavender, sunflowers, vineyards and olive groves.

Bike the Camargue nature reserve, keeping an eye out for pink flamingos, wild bulls and white horses wandering freely through the marshland delta. Shop for fine foods and the latest Provençal fashions at the lively market in St-Rémy-de-Provence. Marvel at the chalky limestone hills of the Alpilles surrounding Les Baux-de-Provence and enjoy a sound-and-slide show projected onto the wall of Cathédrale d’Images, a deserted quarry.

Pause for a glimpse into the asylum where Van Gogh was treated (after lopping off his earlobe) and explore the jewel of Roman engineering, the Pont de Gard aqueduct, by bike or kayak. Relax at the end of the day with a glass of Côte-du-Rhône and a delectable dinner served in the shady courtyard of your 15th century chateau.

A few more reasons why you've gotta go…

  1. The Roman archeology: From the stunning amphitheater to ruins positioned around narrow medieval streets, historic churches and shady terraces, it’s probably why Van Gogh had his most prolific period at Arles.
  2. The fashions: Shop for brightly-colored cotton tank tops, elegant long skirts and matching accessories at the lively market in St-Rémy-de-Provence.
  3. The farms: They’re a great place to get closer to nature, savor delicious products, and learn about an interesting and traditional way of life.
  4. The pink flamingos: You can see them wandering freely at the nature reserve of The Camargue, a wind-swept river delta bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
