From the Field: Holland Family Adventure Vacation

“The open air Zuiderzee Museum is a treat for everyone. Kids will have a ball exploring a 100-year-old sweet shop and playing ‘dress up’ with traditional Dutch attire. Parents will enjoy perusing the museum’s 24,000 piece collection, inspired by the culture and history of the Zuiderzee area.”

Holland: Bike Paths, Windmills & Pancakes Family Biking Adventure

Holland - Bike Paths, Windmills & Pancakes Family Biking Adventure

Laced with bike paths, Holland is the ultimate family biking retreat

Emerald pastures, wildflower-strewn meadows, cobblestone villages and working windmills set the perfect stage for family fun on this 8-day biking adventure through Holland’s pristine northern territory.

Sneak a peek into a traditional Dutch living room as you pedal past homes boasting large, exhibitionistic windows. Explore the inside of a 17th century working windmill in Schermer. Visit the zoo in Emmen, get up-close with giant storks at a breeding center in Schiphorst and watch a glass blowing demonstration in Borger. Take a boat trip through Giethoorn, coined the “Venice of the North” for its narrow canals, thatched houses and hump-back bridges. Walk through the treetops on a canopy tour and marvel at the kaleidoscopic gardens of the Keukenhof, where over six million bulbs flower each spring!

By night, sip a garden aperitif and choose from 100 variations of tasty pancakes at a Dutch pancake restaurant before retiring to the comfort of your hotel or chateau.

A few more reasons why you've gotta go…

  1. The sheep: There are plenty around and you can see herds being taken into the woods by shepherds to graze on the land. Attend a sheep-shearing festival where you can witness firsthand how wool is sheared. It’s great for both kids and adults.
  2. The megalithic tombs: The Hunebedden of Drenthe is famous throughout the country for its graves. These tombs were built in the Stone Age with huge granite boulders that were brought to the site by glaciers in the last ice age.
  3. The Church of St. Bavo: One of the greatest highlights of Haarlem, this church is at least 900 years old and boasts a cobblestone floor whose massive stones are actually the headstones of royalty and famous persons going back to the 1400's.
  4. The straw roofs: Almost all of the local farmhouses have big and beautiful straw roofs. The lakes east of Staphorst have huge cane-fields on which the plants are harvested and then used for roofs, baskets and many other purposes.
